| Earthlink Spy Audit
Earthlink's newsletter announced Spy Audit at »www.earthlink.net/spyaudit/. AdAware says my system is clean, so I thought I'd see what Earthlink's scanner had to say: •It brought up the results in Mozilla (the default browser) where they display as a totally blank page. I had to manually load the html page in IE. •It saw WinVNC and thought it was the Remeye trojan. (Remeye loads VNC with a password of abcd, so there is some basis for this confusion). •It saw something it called "Spy #ff6b5 -- Research In Progress". I think this is also a false alarm, but there isn't enough information to tell what triggered it. •It claims the Alexa Toolbar is enabled; AdAware had previously disabled it for me, so this is also a false alarm. •It sees three adware cookies which AdAware doesn't complain about: •Spy #1802a -- Research In Progress •RealMedia Cookie •TVGuide.com Cookie
Who knows what the first one is. The others are real, but harmless.
For remediation, they offer only TotalAccess 2004. I like the idea that they are addressing the spyware/trojan problem, but this first attempt isn't very impressive. |

| I just posted this in another link about the Spy Audit:
»Re: [Software] Spyware Blocker
I have a question for you though, do you have Total Access 2003 installed??? If you don't, how were you able to get the file with out installing Total Access 2003??? As I said in the above link, I wasn't able to.

| If you mean the Spy Audit file, it is available for download in the link posted by wssddc without having Total Access installed: »www.earthlink.net/spyaudit/ -- Electrolux Death Ray |

| Nope, I just tried it in case it was a different link than what I had. It did the same thing. Downloaded as spyaudit.exe but when it opened it asked if you wanted to run and install Total Access 2003. If you say no then you don't get to take the test. At least that's what happens to me.

Same here. Although I do think it is wrong about the spyware it identified. -- Electrolux Death Ray |

1 edit | reply to skj But the question is...Why when it did it ask me ask me if I wanted to install Total Access 2003 when it went to install???
When you downloaded, did you "Save" or did you "Open"? I did "Open" Please disregard as I just figured it out. You need to do a "Save" download inorder not to install Total Access. Sneaky ELN...lol
Fatness, your right I don't agree with their results either.

I agree with fatness about it identifying the wrong things as spyware. Adaware and Spybot S&D are far superior programs. |

I saved it; that's the only option Mozilla gives for an executable. I connect with a Linux firewall and don't have any other Earthlink software installed. |

| reply to wssddc I just tried the scan at »www.webroot.com/services/spyaudit_03.htm which seems to be what Earthlink is using. It just found Alexa and 4 cookies, no trojans or system monitors. I think Earthlink is providing an out of date version. |
