SpywareBlaster stops some very specific forms of spyware, but not all. Some of the most dangerous spyware items especially for IE users are related to ActiveX controls. SpywareBlaster's most important protections are against a long list of ActiveX spyware items. These blocks should reduce the amount of spyware you get on your system, but since there are other types of spyware, you may still catch some when scanning with Spybot or Ad-aware.
The second protection in SpywareBlaster are blocks for a specific list of spyware related cookies, but these only work for IE6.
Perhaps if you told us what your scans find and clean, we can advise you what other protection or system settings would prevent them.
Difference between SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard: said by lowwatermark: SpywareGuard is a resident scanner (similar in a way to how an anti-virus program works) which proactively scans files prior to them being executed; looking for spyware installation kits and such. It scans with both known signatures and some generic protection techniques to detect and prevent spyware installation. SG also includes capabilities to prevent browser hijacks and provides built-in download protection for Internet Explorer. (Note that the functionality of Browser Hijack Blaster is now included in SpywareGuard, so BHB should not be used with SG.)
SpywareBlaster is a preventative program. It sets flags in the registry to prevent the running of a specific list of bad spyware related ActiveX controls. This includes general spyware and malicious dialers. It also blocks a list of known spyware related cookies in IE6. SpywareBlaster should be run periodically, say once a week, to check for updates to its database. Other than that it doesn't need to be running to provide protection.

| Based on one of his other posts, Jazzy1120 is using Windows 98se with IE 5.5 SP2. Therefore, SpywareBlaster's cookie-blocking feature cannot be implemented on that system.
It sounds like the items being "missed" are cookies, rather than what is usually defined as spyware, so this is probably not a SpywareBlaster or SpywareGuard issue. There are a variety of cookie-blocking techniques and programs available - it might be helpful to know what other security programs (anti-virus, firewall, etc.) are being used - many have cookie-blocking features built in ... |

Yeah, that explains it. IE-SpyAd might be a good addition for users of IE5.5 since it covers most of the source sites where these cookies come from. -- Use the most powerful combo Firewall/AV/AT package available - "Common Sense" - It can be upgraded daily! |

| wow thank u so much for the help,
am using ie5.5, and as far as security,Norton firewall, antivirus,& norton system doctor, all updated, don't think there are spi's in the computer, the ones that are detected are "'cookies only"(but did run try that program SPYHUNTER-let it scan, but it showed 1 cookie & 'supposedly"2 spi in or on my registry, but would not remove any one them-uninstalled &deleted all of that,)will look at SpyAd might be a good addition,'take care, jaz' |

IE-SpyAd looks harder to use than it is. Since it adds a long list of spyware and ad sites to your restricted zone, the only thing you should confirm when installing it is that the security slider for the Restricted Zone in IE is all the way up on HIGH!
To install IE-SpyAd, download the kit from the page linked above and open it. Inside is a file name "ie-ads.reg" just double-click on that to let it "merge" all those settings into your registry automatically. That's really it until you want to upgrade it or uninstall it.
Edit: Do be aware that IE-SpyAd provides more than cookie protection. It puts over 6000 known bad sites into IE's Restricted Zone which, with the slider for that zone at High, gives maximum security in IE for those sites. (At High, IE prevents the running of any ActiveX, scripting, Java and other possibly exploitable browser functions. It's "as secure" as IE gets.) -- Use the most powerful combo Firewall/AV/AT package available - "Common Sense" - It can be upgraded daily! |

| reply to whocares whocares , in addition to the excellent description provided by LowWaterMark , »Spyware Blaster vs, Spyware GUARD you can't really mess anything up. If for any reason you decide it's not for you, it uninstalls just as easily as double-clicking the ie-ads-uninst.reg file. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

When you're done you will see a rather large list of sites in your Restricted Zone. Since you have nothing currently in your Trusted Zone, that will remain the same. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |
