 | [Cingular] Useless Pictures Just a word of caution for those considering Cingular for their wireless carrier. If you're thinking of getting a camera phone and sharing the pictures with friends and family, you'll have to make sure your friends and family have MMS capable phones on the Cingular network, otherwise you can't share any pics. The Cingular network does NOT allow you to email the pics (even though the phones can do that). The ONLY way to send and receive pics on Cingular is via MMS messaging from/to someone else on the Cingular network. The only way you'll ever be able to view those pics you take with your nifty new camera phone is on your phone's tiny little screen.
I wasn't informed of those limitations when I bought my new phones and plan from Cingular. It was only afterwards, when it was too late to cancel, that I discovered the severe limitations. So a word of caution to everyone else is warranted. |

I am wondering, however, if you had chose a different phone model with either an IR port or bluetooth, would this still be a problem? Obviously you wouldn't have known any better at the time you purchased the phone, but something to think about. I am considering switching to Cingular myself and am a little curious about this.

My friends with spring couldn't send me a picture and I couldn't send them one. I am sure at some point GSM providers will be able to send to each other, and CDMA should be able to each other also. -- "I am just like a clock upon the wall, always moving but never really going anywhere" |

 | T-Mobile allows you to e-mail the pictures. Since all cell phones have an e-mail address, you can just do it that way. It works perfectly across carriers, as long as the receiving phone is also MMS capable. |

I have no problems on T-Mobile e-mailing pictures to people's e-mail addresses that are not phones. |

FYI with ATTWS and my camera phone I can email the pics to any email address in addition to sending it with MMS, Bluetooth and IR. -- When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all. »netdotcom.org |

As has been noted, T-Mobile, AT&T, and I think SprintPCS allow pics to be emailed from the phones. Cingular does NOT allow this. That's my point. I was told when I bought the phones and plan that I could use MMS or email to share pics, but Cingular does NOT allow email from the phones and according to their tech support there is no plans to add that feature.
A Cingular tech guy tried to find out the mail server names for incoming/outgoing on Cingular, thinking I could enter those in the phone and get it to work. He was told they do not give out that information and for me to forget about doing that on their network. |

I'm going to send an email to SonyEricsson support to see if my T226 phone can support their USB cable connector and if I can transfer the pics to my computer via that. Otherwise I'm out of luck with this phone/camera. |

Just note that with MMS you'll be restricted to sending only to your friends on the same carrier. With T-Mobile, AT&T, and I think SprintPCS, you can also email your pics to anyone with an email address, including phones on other carriers. Can't do that with Cingular. |

BrushedToothRemember To Shop Smart Shop S Mart join:2001-02-12 Westerville, OH | Correct, I know how the services work, when I posted my original reply I was thinking you wanted to send via MMS, not email with an attachment. Although I did email a picture from T-Mobile to my buddy at Sprint and he couldn't get the image, while I could off my own address, I haven't tried with AT&T as their data plans are awful. -- "I am just like a clock upon the wall, always moving but never really going anywhere" |

Joey BWeePremium join:2001-02-16 Los Angeles, CA | reply to cewyatt Just to clarify on Sprint's end.
With sprint we have a few options:
Email the pics (be it phone or personal email)
Upload the pics directly to our own personal picture catalog on Sprint PCS' site
Or send the pics directly to another Sprint PCS phone.
As far as I have seen, Sprint has handled the use and relay between camera phones in the best and most efficient way. Only thing I could ask for in any further development would be an option to upload pics to a self designated ftp/web site. The phones have the ability but the software remains a restriction. |

 | reply to cewyatt So, it seems everyone except Cingular allows emailing of pics from camera phones. I wonder why Cingular doesn't allow emailing?
Cingular is really pissing me off. In order to speak to someone you have to wade through a mind-numbingly long voice menu (tried hitting "0" or "*" to no avail), when you finally do get someone, 50% of the time they disconnect you and you must wade through the menu yet another time. I have not been able to find an email address for anyone in customer service. Their tech support doesn't seem to be in the loop on what works and what doesn't.
And I'm locked into a freakin' two-year contract with them now. Perhaps I'll sue 'em. |

I have sprint, and I can email the pics anywhere I want. I can also upload them to a picture vault, and then send the pics to anyone from there as well.
I haven't tried the MMS/SMS option of sending the pics yet, though, because no one else we know has web access enabled on their phones. -- The things I do for love... |

Since I am at the beginning of a two year contract, it would cost a lot to cancel now. Even though I had 15 days to cancel, since I ordered the phones and service online, they include the shipping time in that 15 days (isn't that nice of them), and to cancel I had to have the phones back to them via shipping within the 15 days also, they won't accept them at their stores. So in reality I had far less than 15 days.
I have just switched from SprintPCS because in my area they just do not have the necessary network coverage to be of practical use. I've been with SprintPCS for a year and though their customer service people have been exceptionally nice, their network coverage makes them unacceptable. That's why I switched to Cingular since their coverage is nearly omnipresent around here. I just wish they weren't so misleading in their advertisement of "multimedia" and "sharing". |
