| "cavalier" - given to haughty disregard for others
Hmmmm. . .I picked up on the name a little too late. I must've been thinking "cavalry" which of course is a group of mounted soldiers who are supposed ride into my house and correctly configure my computer properly for DSL.
I was looking for an antonym of "support" in MS Word in order to sarcastically describe the "support" supplied by Cavalier when I accidentally clicked on the synonym "hold up." Interestingly enough, synonyms of "hold up" are "delay,""obstruction," "snag,"stoppage," "difficulty" and "hindrance." I couldn't have said it better. This representation of the circularity of good and bad gave me a very zen-like moment.
Where to begin. . . well, I ordered DSL service from Cavalier about two months ago and I won't bore you with the details except to say that they have a serious problem with having/giving wrong information. I don't know much about DSL and TCP/IP stuff so I wasn't concerned when Cavalier sent me two IP addresses--both of which were wrong. The support dude gave me what he described as the "correct" number (not proven as of the writing of this message) but said the network was down in my area so I really couldn't test it. How convenient.
Anyway, I've got everything set up and the lights on my modem are lit up like a Christmas tree and the data transfer light is even blinking on and off as if tons of information were being supplied to my computer but my browser felt it needed to shield me from the awesome flow of data.
So I've checked and triple-checked my network properties and I've told IE to "never dial a connection." But I've got nothing.
Anyone, out there want to throw me a bone? I'm using Windows ME if that helps any. |

| reply to dslless_dan Make sure you are using the yellow crossover cable between your modem to your ethernet card in the PC, then the ethernet light should be on. The Line and Power lights should constantly be on solid. The tx/rx light is the only one that should blink. go to dos command and type in ipconfig or winipconfig and make sure your ip address, subnet, and gateway match what was given to you. Dont have any firewall or antivirus applications open that could be blocking the connection, hope that helps some. browse »support.cavtel.net for guides. |

| reply to espionage007 The power, line and ethernet lights are all solid and the TX/RX light blinks on and off occasionally. I've got all my info (ip address, subnet, and gateway) set up exactly as it should be. I did have ZoneAlarm on but I uninstalled it because I read that it could be a problem. Is there any kind of software product available that can figure out the problem? |

| Of course, I'm not exactly confident that the support guy gave me the correct IP number since they previously gave me two incorrect numbers.
When I run Ipconfig the first listing "O Ethernet" has all the info listed correctly. The second listing "1 Ethernet" has all zeros and the third listing "2 Ethernet" has some other numbers (my dial up connection?). Does that sound right?
Winipcfg shows all the correct info as I entered it.

| So how many ethernet cards do you have in the machine? 3? the 56k modem should be listed as a dialup connection. If you just do have 1 card in there, remove all of the other tcp/ip connections binded to a possibly old card or connection under Network Neighborhood properties, so there is just one listing. If you do have 2 eth cards make sure the crossover cable is plugged in the one that has the ip info |

| reply to dslless_dan From what you are saying you are connected to the dslam. So that narrows it down to 2 things, bad ip info or bad network settings on your machine. I would delete all your network connections and redo them like verz said. Something just looks strange with having 3 eth listed. Whats your ip and ill see if I can ping it from my end. Or you can put in the ip info on the linequality tests on here and post what it gives you.

| reply to dslless_dan I tried your suggestions and it seems that one of the ethernet listings is the ethernet card and the other is my modem or something related to my dial-up connection. I don't know why it is listed as an ethernet connection when I ipconfig/all.
Well, anyway, I've been calling Cavalier and it seems that they are/have been having problems with their network all along. I'm guessing that this is the real reason I'm having problems. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
My IP is 216.49.74.16 and my gateway is 216.49.74.1. The guy at Cavalier couldn't ping my gateway which he indicated was a problem on his end.

Getting alot of errors from that last hop. Not sure if that is the router right before your ip or not. Really strange. That is for sure a bad router or route in the router. But something is blocking the traffic from going through. The gateway is up and is fine as of this morning.
