 | F-Secure and Backweb lite I have F-Secure Antivirus 2004 installed on my Windows XP machine. I recently installated Spybot search & destroy and after an scanning it found about 60 problems, all Backweb lite, that is releated to F-Secure, someone can explain this?
Note that this is an original version of F-Secure.

The Desktop Manager is a separate install, and CAN be removed without harm to the product usage. When you initially set up a product (I had the problem with Logitech), you have the option of installing the Desktop Manager or not.
However, F-Secure uses BackWeb for automatic updates. There may be a similar support for F-Secure as there is for Logitech: Logitech Desktop Messenger Support »www.logitech.globalsupport.com/l···/new.asp quote:
Spyware Response
BackWeb is a client-server content distribution and management application, which allows vendors to pro-actively distribute content to their users. Such companies as Compaq, HP, McAffee, F-Secure, Western Digital, Logitech, Kodak and IBM are some of BackWeb´s customers. Each of these vendors bundles a customized BackWeb client into their products that are then shipped to their end users. These companies use the BackWeb client to distribute drivers, software updates, patches and critical information from a secure server at their site directly to their users' hard-drives.
One of the DLLs that are launched by the BackWeb process is the IadHide3.dll. This DLL is critical for the proper functionality of the BackWeb client... Continue reading here: »www.backweb.com/services/html/spyware.html

(It's not because of the original author, so don't take it personally. It's because there are hundreds of {thousands} of users out there afraid to use one of the best AV's out there...) -- Note to self: When extremely bored, rationalize tan(12*Pi/5) on the back of a notecard..... |

which is exactly why F-Secure should not associate themselves in any way, with a known spyware company. whether the backweb that F-secure uses is spyware or not, many people will not give F-secure a go just because of it. -- Sygate Help Sites!! KING's Site Whitehat Security |

 | Go Bucs, I agree with you.
When I doing a scan with Spybot it just found this "60" problems, but the box is unchecked, so they are not selected by the program it self.
I also agree that F-Secure is one of the worlds best anti-virus program.

It supports bidirectional checking (Client contacts server or server pushes updates to clients), it supports various bandwidth-saving schemes (connecting to FSAV proxies, using another LAN peer to grab updates, etc)
It's just too bad that BACKWEB decided to associate their product with spyware... If they didn't, I'm sure they would double their number of customers. -- Note to self: When extremely bored, rationalize tan(12*Pi/5) on the back of a notecard..... |
