Check Point to buy Zone Labs for $205 million

Check Point Software Technologies plans to buy Zone Labs, which makes security software for desktops, for $205 million, an effort to broaden its product line.

Check Point primarily concentrates on firewalls, server-side software that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic

As with anything, it'll be the details that are critical. If they continue to invest in the standalone desktop product so that home users will benefit from increasing capabilities, then I'm all for it. If they just want to pick out of Zone Labs a few components to be part of a suite they sell to businesses, it could leave home users looking for another product.

Here's hoping for good capital investment and increasing product capabilities!

In most cases they buy things to put their name on them, and use the code.... aka Symantec buying AtGuard from WRQ just to turn around charging $20 more, and start calling it Norton Personal firewall with a new GUI...

Its possible there could be some good aspects for the consumers, but there are always negative effects.

Knowing checkpoint they will increase the price and brand it. They know there is a HUGE corporate market for host based firewalls and IDS so I think they will go in that direction. Will they add features? I think they will, I also see them adding some more power user options.

Does this mean who ever bought ZAP is screwed?
Are they going to cancel zonealarm pro product line.
Damn it just when I buy ZAP now the chances of the entire product being removed.

Why does everyone always think everything is going to go to hell when a company buys another one out?

Well they have a very good reputation for one.

If they do keep the Zone alarm product in place as it is now with future merging of their own tech to maybe better it that would be good. Especially for SOHO use.

But if they are just harvesting not good.

Now that sounds better. If they are going to just going to be acquired and made a division of Check Point all should be OK for all of us who use ZA* hopefully!

From what I've read, it seems like a positive merger.

It would be premature to call yourself "screwed". But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned; I just renewed my ZAPro license for two years. Let's just wait and see what happens.

I don't see why anyone should be upset about recent ZA purchases. I think things will stay the same for now, and I also know that Zone Labs will continue to support all of their users.

Well you'll still have a key that lasts for two years(provided you dont feel the need to version chase) those that went through the Mc afee/Conseal deal you'll know what i mean.

"Does this mean who ever bought ZAP is screwed?"

From what myself and other Team Z members such as marti See Profile have been told. Nothing is going to change except for the company now being a division of Checkpoint. Your current license will remain valid for the period of time you've bought it for. And all current products will be supported and further developed.

As was mentioned above. With any merger you have to take a wait and see approach. The person who gives Team Z there information has always been straight forward and honest. If they state that no changes are being made. I trusted there word until proven otherwise.

Personally for me this would seem to show that consumers still aren't supporting ZoneLabs with there buying dollars. Relying upon the free version only.
