 | Sympatico Speed Increase Just received a press release that 1.5 MB Sympatico is going to 3 MB, and the Ultra 3 MB service is going to 4 MB. Upload speed will increase "up to" 800 kB.
No price changes will take place as a result of these improvements.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but does an extra $30+ a month justify only a potential (maximum) 25% speed increase for Ultra customers?

As for price, *shrug*, it's the same with my cable provider, I pay 60$/month for an extra megabit. It may be worth it depending on what other changes they include with it. But I am highly skeptical of these claims until I see some evidence. |

 | Looks pretty real. If that's true then I'm switching right back down to normal HSE! Could see them lifting the unlimited bandwidth after a change like this... |

Bell to double download speed for High-Speed Internet - Improve upload performance by five times TORONTO, Dec. 15 /CNW/ - Offering the best performance in its class, Bell Canada will double the speed of its High Speed Internet service from 1.5 Mbps to up to 3 Mbps. Also receiving increased speeds are Bell Internet customers who are currently on the 3Mbps service will move to up to 4 Mbps. Uploading performance for both of these customer groups will increase five times to up to 800kbps. These speed upgrades will deliver measurable performance improvements through Bell's further investment in network capability, not achievable by just changing modem settings. The price for the enhanced service will not change for either Bell residential Sympatico customers or Bell Business Internet customers. Bell's high-speed Internet service is the country's broadband market leader with 1.4 million business and residential customers. Unlike cable high- speed, Bell's high speed connections are carried via a dedicated line and are not shared among users. This provides for greater consistency of speed regardless of the time of day.
More Speed for Consumers
"More than half of our customers use the Internet for instant messaging, online games and sharing digital photos - all activities where speed in both directions matters," said Charlotte Burke, senior vice-president, Consumer Internet Services, Bell Canada. "By doubling our speed and increasing our upload performance, we give our customers a much larger door to the Internet and all it has to offer." "Canadian Internet subscribers are looking for a total Internet experience that includes dependable access and speed, as well as online information, entertainment, applications, gaming, networking and security," added Burke.
Meeting Demand from Business Customers
"Business customers require more speed to store large amounts of data off-site to ensure back-up and security," said Pat Tremaine, Senior Vice- President, Marketing - Small and Medium Business. "Speed is required to allow them to share large files with customers and suppliers. Bell customers are also turning more and more to videoconferencing over the Internet. These and other functions demand considerable two-way speed and we're responding to that demand." More than 75 per cent of Bell business and residential high-speed customers will experience speed and performance enhancements in the first quarter of 2004. Bell Canada currently offers DSL high speed access to approximately 80 per cent of its service territory, and has plans to expand it further. Bell Canada recently filed a proposal with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which calls for the continued expansion of broadband connections to homes, businesses and public institutions in rural and remote areas of Ontario and Quebec where service is unavailable. If its proposal is approved, Bell Canada plans to invest up to $170 million to add 200,000 connections over a three-year period. In addition, the company provides high-speed Internet access just about anywhere in Canada through Bell ExpressVu's Direct PC service.
About Bell Canada ----------------- Bell Canada, Canada's national leader in communications, provides connectivity to residential and business customers through wired and wireless voice and data communications, local and long distance phone services, high speed and wireless Internet access, IP-broadband services, e-business solutions and satellite television services. | reply to elusion I take you back to my original post though.... let's suppose the typical 1.5 MB customer sees 2.7-2.9 MB for free after the change, but an Ultra customer like me sees my 2.8-2.9 MB connection go to only 3.5-3.6 MB. I know I'll be "downgrading" to retain my current level of service unless the Ultra price is forced to drop. If the speed can't get beyond 4 MB due to technical limits in ADSL delivery then it's simply not worth the extra dollars. |

Hey... it's a consumer decision. If it's not worth it to you to have 4 meg/700 kb, then downgrade. Me? I'm sticking with HSLD. Increased speeds and 2 hours of long distance. -- My Ontario is NOT For Sale! |

| reply to ATCtech8 If current Ultra customers can't get 4meg then they can downgrade to Regular HSE and pay a lower price for the same speeds they were getting before... For current Ultra customers who can get the 4meg service, they get 1mbps extra for the same price... I'm sure Bell will do all they can to make sure everyone be able to get at least 3mbps sync |

From what I hear, it can support DSL over a 25 km range.
