| [NEWSGROUPS] paid news service recommnedations? (usenet)
i am currently with easynews which is $9.99 for every 6 gigs, or month, whichever occurs first. i am looking for a good alternative because they seem to not be able to handle their incoming traffic. i constantly get timed outs, can't retrieve headers for more popular groups, etc. and i'm tired of it. i am looking for something pretty much in the same price range or cheaper, with *good* retention rates (easynews has at least 14 days which is why i went with them over 2 years ago), and fast and big pipes to handle all their traffic. any suggestions? |

| I've had Giganews for sometime now. I've never had problems like you have with Easynews. When I retrieve headers or bodies, they max my connection of 1500/256. They just went to 30 days retention. You might want to give them a try. -- Fortunately I keep my feathers numbered, for just such an emergency.-Foghorn Leghorn |

BTW as far as i know easynews is the only service that has a usable web interface, global search feature to search all newsgroups at one time, and access to 30 days worth of postings.
best of luck, dumwaldo |

1 edit | reply to dropshadow The Giganews retention has improved considerably lately. Before, when it was only 18 days max, the odds were that if you tried downloading anything that was over 10-11 days old, there was a good chance that those articles would have been purged from their servers. Earlier today I tried to download some stuff from a group I hadn't pulled headers from in almost a month, and found that articles dating from 11/27 (24 days old as of today) were still on their servers. This is for multipart binaries, BTW. If you're using Giganews for text groups, the retention is probably at least 90 days, if not more. -- "Kayura or Badamon, whichever you are, you should know that I will never give up this battle. Hey, dumwaldo! What were you smoking?
I think maybe the site you were thinking of was:
...or maybe it's another one.
Here's a couple more:
»members.tripod.com/~newscompare/chart.html »www.geeks.org/~ed/Usenet_Servers.html
Personally I recommend OctaNews which is probably too new to make anybody else's list. EasyNews is definitely the service I would buy if I could afford it. -- NewsPlex Discussion Group |

| reply to dropshadow I recently purchased 25Gigs for someone as a christmas gift from Astraweb. What made my decision was the flexibility of the Pay-by-Download Plans especially the "No expiry date on your credits" As for the service I heard nothing but praise with ridiculous speeds of ~1500KB/second (thats bytes not bits). -- ¤For your ears¤ ¤For your eyes¤ |

That's not consistent. Their header downloads can be painfully slow and the speed is usually consistent around 600-700kbps. |

| reply to JasonSVA Can't believe Easynews' Global Search - great!
Its web interface makes it almost easier to use for, say, mp3's than some of the NG clients. :)
"Web Server
The Easynews web site contains every file posted to every Usenet newsgroup in the last 25 days. That's over 8 million files with hundreds of thousands of new files every day. Bulk downloads are made easy with our Zip Manager. Put all your files into one easy to download zip file. The web site also listens on port 81 to bypass broken web cache/proxy servers at your work or ISP." -- Cheers! - mitch |

| reply to dropshadow I have the free 1Gig accounts for Giganews with comcast, but those go away fast. I've since switched to Newsguy, you get 15GB for $13/month. But the value is in the longer plans, I got the 6month for $50 plan, which is under $10/month for 15GB. They have a free trial, so don't take my word for it. *And they have a web interface*
The retention is pretty good, about 14+days in most MP3 groups, and at least 5 days in Movie groups (probably longer but I get stuff fast). When I first joined the completion wasn't as good as Giganews, but for the past two months it's been almost perfect. |

| reply to dropshadow If agent is partnering with SuperNews and UseNetServer that just sounds like they're reselling the respective services. Upon hearing all the good things, I decided to go Octanews speed capped account this month. So far, I am amazed. Definetely worth trading some speed for reliable retention and completion. |
