Verizon DSL and MSN 8

Hi. I've been using Earthlink DSL for about 4 years, and got great up/down speeds. (I had a direct loop; no phone filters, etc.) I'm moving in with my fiance and we just got Verizon DSL. I set it up yesterday, and am confused about the MSN 8 "freebie" included with the Verizon package. I opted, for the time being, to not install the MSN 8 from the install disk, mainly because I try to avoid as much MSN anything as possible. I was just wondering what, if anything, I am missing. I don't need the "parental controls" touted by the MSN hype, and don't see anything immediately desirable about having MSN 8 on the system. Any help is appreciated. TIA.

I think that when interacting in a public forum such as this it's extremely important to bear one thing in mind: There is no such thing as a stupid question; only stupid people. (Heheheh!! Rock on!!!)

MSN includes, umm, msn.com or hotmail.com email of course (interestingly enough, hotmail is more reliable, and it's free :P), access to encarta.com, uhhh, webspace for each email address and extra email space, chat rooms (which used to be free, now you have to be a paying msn customer), "MSN Pictures" (no idea what this is and I've had MSN for almost 3 years), "MSN Money" (see previous explanation), and one feature that I actually do appreciate - remotely stored favorites (in case you use a different computer). Nothing that you can't live without, I guess.

Thanks. The only other feature I know about is (purportedly) the good anti-spam email feature, but since I use MailWasher, that's not really too relevant.

Good move staying away from MSN8. They'll probably get you used to everything and then send out notification about starting to charge for service.

I tried the MSN service. It's too intrusive. Changed my homepage without even asking. Uninstalled within minutes.

Just for the record, it's Verizon that does that along with the branding. The normal MSN software doesn't mess with things.

Does Verizon & MSN8 allow you to do POP3 email? or does it block it and force you to use MSN or Hotmail email?

Just to let you guys know about Verizon and MSN 8 (Now version 9). In order to get version 9 now you have to do a little trick. If you have MSN 8 installed from Verizon CD it will not let you upgrade to version 9 just yet. You can get around this by just uninstalling Verizon/MSN 8's co branded version and doing a web install of MSN 8 software from MSN.com. When you log in with your already merged hotmail email address and password, it will still let you log in. It still knows you are a verizon customer. Once the MSN.com home page opens, go to this URL »membercenter.msn.com/ (I tried to go here with the Verizon MSN 8 installed and it would not work, but it might with you), if you can get to this page it gives you the option to download newest version MSN 9.

With the new version you are able to download McAfee Personal Firewall plus and Viruscan for free which will work on your system wether you use MSN9 or not, just keep it installed. With the new outlook connector it now converts your Hotmail accounts to MAPI accounts that you can use with outlook. I don't use MSN 9 at all on my system, just downloaded it for the the firewall software, but for those that use it, might have some cool features. NOTE: It has some issues if you are running XP SP2 Beta on your system.

Your Verizon and MSN email are completely separate entities. The MSN or Hotmail (if you chose to import them) are available via the web, the HTTP connector built in to Outlook and Outlook Express, and in Version 9 there's a new Outlook Connector for MSN (Outlook only).

MSN 9 doesn't go public till the first or second week of January. I think it's the 8th but I'm not sure. So you will probably be auto-updated after that date.

I just went to membercenter.msn.com, logged in with my @msn email address that I created when I installed the verizon MSN software, and clicked the download the software link. Ran into a problem installing it, but I think that was cos of my firewall and privacy software, not cos of the Verizon MSN 8.

The only good thing i found With this msn8 verizon dsl freebie was that it surfs faster than verizon.and MSN e-mail is more stable than verizon.Verizon e-mail is constantly down or error pro 3 out of 7 days a week .but that's what happen when i had it. I never got e-mail on time from verizon and at times they routed my mail thru a different time zone i once got e-mail from a friend that was only 10 miles away sent via Iceland the time stamp had that posting kinda dumb to send mail around the world when your only down the road and at times you get verizon e-mail 1or2 weeks late. But as for MSN my E-mail was on the money every time in a matter of minutes 9 times out of 10.The MSN is pretty good but MSN is cookie crazy and does a lot of snooping where it shouldn't be on your pc.But they all do it so you need to find the lesser of the evils among them.
