| Problems config speedstream 5637
I bought a SpeedStream 5637 modem off a guy on Ebay. He did not mention that this modem is not compatible with Bell Sympatico. Can this modem be configured and can you go through the set-up, I have no manuals or software. I was told that this modem is similar to the 5660? |

According to the only Documentation I can find here:
»kb.efficient.com/article.asp?art···19&p=351
The very rare 5637 appears to not work on any Alcatel Compatible DSLAM (like a 5660 or 5667 does), but it was made to specifically connect to only a Globespan physical layer chipset at the DSLAM. That's if I understand the Document. I've never heard of the 5637 until today. It appears to be closer to a 5667 as it has a USB port and a 5660 does not have USB.
You would need to ask your ISP if you need Alcatel or Globespan compatibility.

| reply to martod I bought a 5637 off ebay as well. But I got it to work!! The DSL light would stay solid (indicating sync) but no data packets would pass through. I built the console serial cable as decribed elsewhere on this site. Hyperterminal 9600,8,n,1 user = admin, password admin. My modem has Globespan firmware. Type 'help' to learn to navigate through the console CLI (command line interface). Get to the modems VCI and VPI settings. I changed them from 0 /38 to 0 / 35 and I've been online since. I left the encapsulation as llcbridged. Don't forget to 'save config' or the setting will be lost on reboot. Apparently the VCI / VPI don't need to be exact for a sync pulse but they do for data. My ISP is b2b2c.ca but I think it's the same settings as Bell and many others.
Hope this helps - let us know what you find out about your 5637. |

| reply to martod I tried. No telnet either. The device doesn't seem pingable. I tried 192.168.254.254 the 192.168.1.1 and 10.0.0.1 addresses used for other models. This was with the PC having automatic and similar manual IP addressing. Since the true origin of the modem is unknown my guess it is flashed with ISP specific firmware. I was very happy to talk to the modem at all. I thought it might have been dead and I was going to back over it with a truck to finish it off. Do you think I should change the encapsulation method to VCmux ? Maybe less overhead? My ISP has no idea. My download speed is 600k - looking for more. Maybe I should be happy with that 'cause my ISP called today to say my line length is 6.7km and any service was impossible. |
