Re: Uniden ENR-1504 router? Comments...

I bought this router as a backup for my Webramp. A few things I discovered while playing with the router left me less than impressed.

1. There isn't any way to configure the router to "stealth" all the ports even though it does "close" them. Similarly, the router will respond to all ICMP (ping) packets. You can't set it so it doesn't.

2. MAC Spoofing does not work correctly. When setting the router for DHCP, MAC spoofing will prevent the router from grabbing an IP address with Comcast broadband. It seemed to be able to grab it from my other router on SOME occasions with MAC spoofing enable. In general MAC spoofing and DHCP are very flakey. By the way, PPPOE doesn't work with MAC Spoofing enabled either. (This shouldn't matter for most people.)

3. Dynamic DNS only works if you chose your domain to be "dyndns.org" regardless of the domains www.dyndns.org offers. This is a silly thing really.

These are my major gripes. The MAC spoofing issue is pretty serious and I wasn't able to get UNIDEN tech support to acknowledge it was a problem.

There are some good things to this router like price and general reliability. I can recommend this router if you have ADSL static or PPPOE but would stay away if you need WAN DHCP in any form especially if you need MAC Spoofing. The fact that all the ports can automatically adjust for crossover or straight cables is a real plus if you have a collection of unused ethernet cables.

The ENR1504 hardware looks to be generally sound but the firmware needs serious work.

That's a great review of the Uniden model. I almost jumped on the sale of $20 with a $20 rebate on the preorder, but I think I'll pass based on your review.

They make great phones, but their two-way radio biz went SOUTH...guess networking products is their new venture.

Uniden Packet Filtering Screenshot
You can set the router to block ICMP. You need to enable the packet filtering section. I have uploaded a screenshot of what I have done to enable packet filtering.

Also, MAC spoofing works fine. Have you tried rebooting your modem after you have set the spoofed MAC? If you look in the 'System Information' section, it shows the Default MAC and the Spoofed MAC.

Overall. Great router for $0

Re: Uniden ENR-1504 router? Comments...

You seem to be very familiar with this router. I recently purchased it to replace a Linksys BEFSR41 because I needed the Port Redirection feature offered on the Uniden, but I'm having problems with the Uniden router. Below is a description of what I've experienced. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

With the Linksys router, both WAN and LAN communications were working properly. Most importantly, I was able to run a web based application (uses Apache & Tomcat) on my server both within the LAN and over the WAN (through Internet Explorer). Access to this application is gained through a URL in Internet Explorer. The URL is the same wether you are access it from the LAN or the WAN.

Since replacing the Linksys router with the Uniden router, I have been unable to run this web application from inside my LAN. I can successfully run the application over the WAN (using the same URL as before), but receive a “page cannot be displayed” error when I attempt to access it over the LAN.

Basic configuration overview:
ISP Service – Optimum Online
DNS Service – TZO.com
Uniden Router has 3 computers and a Belkin wireless router connected to it.
Computers Connected to Router:
Port 1 – Connected computer is acting as a web server, but is not hosting a web site. Instead it is the host for the application we are running over the web. This computer has a static IP address of 192.168.1.11

Port 2 – Connected computer is being used as a PC Anywhere host. This computer has a static IP address of 192.168.1.12

Port 3 – Belkin wireless router (configured to act as a dumb hub) is connected in this port. One computer accesses the network through this wireless router with a dynamic IP address.

Port 4 – Connected computer is the “kids machine” and has a dynamic IP address

I believe the router is configured correctly because all computers on the LAN have access to the outside (i.e. all have internet access). In addition, I can successfully ping every computer on the LAN from any computer on the LAN.

I believe the Dynamic DNS is configured properly because we are able to access the LAN (through PC Anywhere, VNC, and Internet Explorer) from outside the network.

Based on the troubleshooting I have run, I have been unable to determine why the URL to access the web application is not working over the LAN. Below is information about this web application:

Uses Apache 1.3.23 (listening to port 6800)
Uses Tomcat 3.3.1 (listening to port 6700)

The Ports listed below have been mapped to the web server (192.168.1.11)
80
8080
6700 (Tomcat is configured to listen to this port)
6800 (Apache is configured to listen to this port)
5900 (VNC uses this port)

The Ports listed below have been mapped to the PC Anywhere host (192.168.1.12)
5631 through 5632

HELP!
