ShortyPremium join:2001-01-19 Vermont, USA 2 edits | AdsGone popup stopper spying? Just a little heads up about my experience with AdsGone.
I have been trialing a few different popup stoppers lately because I want to recommend one to a friend and want to know about the program I recommend before I do that. I know this whole thing is my fault for not being more careful but it still irritates the hell out of me. I know better but, anyway...
Here is what happened:
I downloaded a copy of AdsGone from Here to give it a trial based on the review Here
Installed the trial version no problem. Then, when running it for the first time, it wants to access the internet for the purpose of updating "new ad blocking data". So like a fool I allow it. Anyway, after running it for less then 5 minutes I decide I don't like it and uninstall it. See ya later no harm done. Not!
Less then 5 minutes later I receive a automated email, in my main email that I NEVER give out no less, from AdsGone "tech support" wanting to know why I uninstalled the program and reminding me that there were fixes for known issues, like, for example, there is an issue with AdsGone and Kaaza which they noticed I had installed.
So as to be clear, I NEVER entered any email at anytime nor did I say what programs were installed on my computer so its obvious to me they are collecting information and sending it home, the bastards.
Concerning the email address, I assume they looked in Outlook Express for that information and even though I never use it I did foolishly have a account with my main email setup in it.(account is now deleted, btw.)
I hope people can make sense of this because I'm hurrying as I have to go to work soon.
Anyway, here is wishing a pox on the folks at AdsGone and also a swift kick in the ass for myself for knowing better but still doing something stupid. | | Chief Sparky52 Still On PatrolPremium join:2001-04-25 Thibodaux, LA | Damn shame you didn't sniff the outbound packets to see what they were getting from you, although it becomes obvious when you got that "magic" email. Thanks for the heads up. -- Life's too short to drive slow cars. | | ShortyPremium join:2001-01-19 Vermont, USA 4 edits | reply to Shorty
My personal email using my first name. Ya, that was magic all right.:(
I have sent an email to "A1Tech" detailing my observations, will see where that goes.
I also pulled this from the licensing agreement:
quote: " (b) Evaluation Period. Once You start to use AdsGone, You will obtain a temporary "Evaluation License" to install, store, load, execute, display and evaluate the Licensed Program 21 days. At the end of the Evaluation Period, You can terminate this Agreement by uninstalling AdsGone. By agreeing to use the software, you agree to allow A1Tech software to send you periodic emails. The email will be used to assess how you felt about the trial version and send information to you about special offers. Your email will NOT be sold or given away. We will not send you more than a few email messages if any."
Does agreeing to this give them the go ahead to peruse my hard drive, find my personal email and forward it to them along with installed software? I don't think so and told them as much.
And in the ultimate irony, AdsGone incudes a spyware scanner. | | |
