[DSL] Here's my 11 items, please advise.

Hello everyone, I'm getting weird readings, hopefully someone can give me some insights to help boost my downloads speed. Thanks.

The Tweak and Line Quality tests are inconsistent. The Tweak test says you are pingable, but the Line Quality test says you're not. Did you change something between the two tests that would have affected this?

You have retransmission errors. That will affect your speeds. We need to get the errors cleared up, then we can proceed with tweaking. Try these:
»Tweaking FAQ »What does power-cycle my modem mean and how do I do it?

Let's try one thing while you're doing those:
-Download Dr.TCP.
-Set the TCP Receive Window (RWIN) to 32120.
-Set everything with a pull down option/menu to Default.
-Blank/Clear all other fields.
-Save.
-Reboot.
-Post an up-to-date tweak test.
-Post the results of the speed test nearest you.

Please drop the RWIN value to what I posted up above and do another Tweak, Speed, and Line Quality tests.

The RWIN in the Tweak test you posted still shows the large value. Did you do the "save, exit, and reboot" after changing it in DrTCP?

Yep, no matter what I do, the value are still the same.

Have you run another "broadband optimizer"? (We're investigating issues related to DrTCP not being able to modify some things after other programs have run.)

I'm using DSL Speed for optimizing. Does that affect anything?

Hmmm, I'm getting anywhere from 98-530kb for downloads, it seems rather erratic and inconsistent. What's wrong with my connection?

To answer your first question, I don't know if "DSL Speed" affects it or not. We only use DrTCP here on this site. Some do appear to cause problems, but I don't know about this one. I'm still one of the "new kids on the block", so if one of the "old timers" comes along, maybe they'll have some information about it.

However, if you can disable it, it would help me analyze what's going on relative to your inconsistent speeds. (As an old IBM performance analyst, I believe in eliminating as many variables as possible when looking for something like this.)

I know you've run Line Quality tests before, but, run another one, making sure you are pingable.

Not sure if I understand what it says though.

OK, let me describe what I'm looking at.

1) Look at the EC (East Coast) plot and compare it with the WC (West Coast) plot. The WC plot is (mostly) flat on top. That's the way it ought to be. The EC plot, on the other hand, has a "saw tooth" pattern. Not good.

Now, where's the problem?

2) Look down the columns of numbers. I'm looking at best, avg, and worst. On each row, look at the difference between best and worst. If there is a small difference (like a millisecond), that's good. Look at the "(YOUR ADDRESS)" line of the EC data - the difference is 16 ms. Not good. Same line in the WC data has a difference of 62 ms. Those lines are the only ones that have differences above 1 ms.

Therefore, the problem is between rback2-fa2-0.fyvlar.swbell.net (your gateway into the SBC network) and your computer.

Now, the problem is: what's causing the problem? We start with:
»Tweaking FAQ »What does power-cycle my modem mean and how do I do it?
»/faq/5322
I posted those earlier, but I don't know if you did them.

Additional questions:
1) What type of wiring goes to the modem? Is it "plain old flat phone extension" wire? Or is it "twisted pair" cable - like cat3/5/5e/6 cable?
2) Can you move the modem close to the NID (the gray box on the back/side of the house) and see if the errors go away?

Let's stop there and let you catch your breath and get a few winks of shut-eye.

According to ADSL Guy, there's something wrong with my wiring. I had already double check my filter and wiring and everything seems to be in check.

Did you let the hawgs gnaw on it?

He probably can't tell if it's the wiring in your house or theirs, though, right?

How about the 2 questions I posed in my last post?

I'm using the plain old flat type to connect to the modem and I am pretty much closest to the box as we speak.
