The flat stuff can pick up noise (hum) from other electrical devices. This can cause errors. Did ADSL Guy have you unhook everything but the modem? If not, you might try that and do another Tweak and Line Quality test to see what happens.
To clear up problems I had, I finally replaced the wire that ran to the modem with cat3 and put a splitter at the NID. My service became very stable after I did that. I wish now that I had put in cat5. |

| A "splitter" is a device that is better than a filter.
A filter is placed between POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) devices and the line to keep the POTS devices from draining off the high frequency signals that DSL uses.
A splitter goes out next to the NID. The one I have (and they may all be this way) has active circuits in it (a transistor) that splits the signal into low frequency and high frequency portions and puts them out onto separate connectors that go to the POTS lines and the home-run (CAT5) to the modem. This circuitry also does a combining function to the signals going back toward the phone system.
The FAQ articles on this indicate that the splitter is the preferred device, especially if you already have a home-run.
Did this make sense? |

| There's a FAQ about where to get splitters ( »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Splitter, DSL/POTS ? Where can I get one? ). I don't think you'll find them at RatShack.
Here's a link to the one I got: »www.allentelproducts.com/Catalog···PID=2010
Here's the invoice information I got: 1 - Allen Tel AT626DSL - DSL Splitter Outdoor Device @ $39.99ea. = $39.99 -------------------------------------------------- SubTotal = $39.99 Shipping & Handling (4 - 6 Days Delivery) = $5.00 (Residential Delivery) State Sales Tax = $0.00 -------------------------------------------------- Total for Order = $44.99 |

| It was easy. (But, then, I've been messing with wiring and stuff like that since I was 8 years old. )
Do you have a friend that's a "handy man"? Actually, it doesn't take many skills. There aren't that many connections on the splitter I got. And, they are clearly labeled. The instructions were also pretty clear. |
