MTU Question

Like many people posting over in the Linksys forum, I have a BEFW11S4v4 router that "locks up" and freezes every day or so, requiring a power cycle. In my case this happens in the middle of the night. One of the suggestions that Linksys tech support has made is to change the MTU on the router from 1500 to a lower number. Does anyone here know what the optimal RR MTU is for users in NYC? I recognize that this may well be a Linksys issue, but I also figure that I might as well consider the RR implications as well. Another RR user who has experienced the same problem suggested that this might be tied to network changes in connection with the recent speed increases. Thanks.

Thanks - I had been using the 1500 MTU. So based on what Linksys is suggesting (trying lower amounts) I was wondering if in fact RR uses a different number. Someone told me he has solved his problem with an MTU of 1400 (also RR, but not NYC) though I still experienced the problem (so far) with 1400, 1450 and 1492, three of the amounts suggested by Linksys.

MTU is not the problem. Does your router have the latest firmware? What cable modem do you have? Modem signal levels? Another possibility is that your router is being flooded with ping requests. What does your firewall log say? The more info you can provide us, the easier we can rule things out.
