4 edits | [HELP] Crap Speeds and stuff from Rogers
I'm getting lower than 500kbps speeds but if I call rogers and complain they might send a tech over to replace my modem.. and i hear they are giving out cybersurfers again... which won't help since the CyberSurfers in my area are even worse... I got a really crappy Terayon TJ615 (DOCSIS) which replaced my trusty Piperider that I miss.... -- "A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. I hear ya. Rogers seriously needs to start cleaning up their act, because if I don't see an improvement by the end of this month I'm switching to sympatico. |

| OK ... (And thanks for changing this to a useful posting from the rant btw).
Now first, your MTU should be 1500 Second, you should have selective acks on
How you set those on a Mac, I dunno !
Now the LQ test ... you can dismiss the West Coast data ... it's crap long before it gets to Rogers network. The East Coast trace is telling though ...
The pings are consistent all the way except on the hop from the CMTS to you.
Looks to me like the problem is you've got a bunch of mega bandwidth hogs on your segment who are doing LOTS of uploading. The fact that you CAN get the speeds from time to time is telling. The slowdown is likely because you can't get your acks back up the overloaded uplink. |

| reply to corster From the Mac Faq:
First of all, if you've run the Tweak Tester it likely advised you to turn on 'selective ACKs;' unfortunately selective ACKs are not supported by OS X.
* A brief note on MTU values: the default MTU under OS X is 1500, and this will work fine for most users. Some ISP/router combinations require a user to change the MTU to a different value, usually 1450. In these cases the change to the MTU isn't made to improve performance; it ensures functionality. Usually, if not always, the DSLR Tweak Tester will report the MTU of an OS X machine as 1488 - this is a misreading on the part of the Tweak Tester caused by OS X having timestamps enabled (see below). -- "A proof is a proof. | OK, thanks for that info ... it then resolves to problem on your node. I'm quite confident that the problem is NOT with your modem or line. You wouldn't see that kind of variation on a modem problem. The signal strengths on your modem are quite respectable. Transmit power is on the high side but still OK. (You should see mine!!!) SNR is very good which is the important thing.
So, having eliminated your modem and your computer and your line, what's left ... either the CMTS or congestion. |

| reply to corster It just infuriates me how Rogers support keeps on telling me to connect my modem directly into my computer and log onto THEIR websites to download things and test the speed. Naturally I end up getting 126 KB/s, and 80 KB/s from Downloads.com
The folks over at Rogers support needs to wake up and smell the coffee. I'm surfing the net, and downloading things, and it ain't going to matter if I'm getting a 126 KB/s on their website because what matters is the speed that I get elsewhere on the net.
I took another speed test during my call over to Rogers tonight and did a speed test of my own after I did one at www.Rogershelp.com
This is what I got.

This is absolutely a disgrace, man, and there just seems to be no way to get those stubborn people to relinquish a DOCSIS modem over to me. |
