New Newsgroup download cap

Saw an item in the Powerlink Newsletter:
quote:
Improved Power Link Newsgroup Service

In January 2004 we will be making changes to improve our newsgroup service. Improvements will include greater news article completeness and significantly longer news article retention via a new partnership with Giganews, the industry leader in Usenet services.

With the improved service, Power Link news service users can download up to five gigabytes of newsgroup content per month that can be shared among all of your household's email accounts. Additional volume can be purchased directly from the Giganews service.
Will this be a rolling implementation? Will our newserver name change? Will we be directly pointed at a giganews server? Will we be able to see how much of our cap we've used up? This does seem to be an explicitly defined cap rather than the stealth caps we keep reading about.

Cheers.

I BELIEVE the change will be done by DNS. Whatever you use know will be pointed to a Giganews server. I am certain you will be able to see your usuage. It is a defined cap for newsgroups the same as most companies who use Giganews have. Comcast I believe has 1 GB.

So when I ping nntp and it comes back as news2.news.adelphia.net should that tell me I'm still on Adelphia's homegrown servers? Or should the 68.168.78.13 tell it is still Adelphia? (www.giganews.com is 216.166.62.81.)

How will we be able to query our progress toward cap? A visit to the powerlink profile page perhaps?

Thanks Santa!

Giganews will have a page you can login to that shows your total usage, amt used per day, and estimate of when you will reach your cap if you keep up the same downloading.

That shouldn't interfere either way. The binaries were always incomplete when I used them. I don't think that has changed in a while. So I think this will be a completely new experience.
