[FAH] New to FAH 4.0

Last night I decided to investigate FAH.

I am happy to find out LINUX is supported too. I have a Dual PII 233Mhz Samba Server, occasional WWW Browser that I started up a FAH session.

I missed this FAQ »Team Helix FAQ »Team Number and where will my credits go? so I will start another process on another LINUX console using 214386208 so that this group gets credit

»Team Helix FAQ »What is the Machine ID# and what is its purpose? just checking out as I seek and ask additional thoughts this morning. One machine name works -- good!

My bandwidth to the Internet is 4Meg down/0.5Meg up. Not sure if that helps?

I also wondered if a halted session can be resumed. I don't use the XP machine AMD XP-2600 as much as my daughter. I kinda wish it could just run as a background process.

The FAQs also mention upcoming FAH 4.0 -- that is what I got on the download

********* OOPS! Tell me, when a full process is done, does the program exit, or start a new process? I would hate to ignore the Linux machine for 4 months, and find out I was not contributing for 3 months ****************

WELCOME USA2K !!! I can tell you that a halted session will pick right back up where it left off once restarted - nothing to fear there. And... after a full process has completed, the FAH will not exit - it will send your work units (WUs) back and download your next little project automatically!! Hope this helps you out !! Again... WELCOME !!

If you're going to be doing Genome exclusively then use the 214386208 Team number, but if you are going to be doing Folding or a combination of both, I would use the Team 4 number.

You only put a different Machine ID# if you are running more than 1 client on a machine, so if you are only running 1, you are good.

Bandwidth plays no role in how well or fast you complete a work unit.

Yoou halt the client in Windows using Ctrl-C. It will pick up from the last check point when you restart it.

When the process is done the client sends it's results to Stanford and starts a downloads a new work unit.

I hope that answers some of your questions!

Thanks! Team Helix is on my Favorites list now.

It will be interesting to see how these computing projects evolve. In 2003 my computer was a W98SE PII400, I expect as PCs get replaced, and fast Internet connections multiply, these processes can be executed faster every day

I wonder if companies dedicate any PCs, and if that dedicated hardware can be a tax write-off to encourage more participation?

In the 2½ years I have been doing this it has changed quite a bit. The clients and servers are more stable and the amount of people doing them has skyrocketed.
Like I said, the Internet connection speed plays no role in the speed of the process other then uploading the completed wu faster. I use to have all my boxes on dial up and that was a headache, so having it on broadband is great.
As far as tax right offs go, being an accountant, I can tell you there is no write off for doing this project.

That just seems wrong

It was no way a consideration of mine -- just thinking about added industry support to really one-up the projects success.

I just thought of something :
If you switch users on XP can the same FAH application run, or would that mess things up? Or will it do anything in the background from the other login?

To be safe, I'll just run it for now.
On Linux, I wonder how many sessions in different directories would be feasible? I have several console screens besides the Graphical interface that I won't use for this.

Don't worry about losing WUs... Be sure to Crtl + C when you shut down tho. I have to shut down the 3.06 GHZ pc every nnight... I hear complaining about the electric bill here. Anyway as soon as my youngest niece is out of pre-school this May, I am going to offer paying for the electric bill so it can fold 24/7. Besides I want to get an additional computer to fold with.

Switching users with FAH running normally on XP would kill the client, yes. There is some info in the Team Helix FAQ, however, about running FAH as a service. In that case, logging off and on or switching users wouldn't be a problem.

Welcome to our family, usa2k! Glad to have you with us!

Welcome to Team Helix. You might be able to put it in the start menu so that when you boot, it runs in the background, but I'm not sure how to do it in Linux or PC.

Be careful what you ask for - you just might get it.
