| reply to whatever8 >Earlier this month, Time Warner Cable increased the maximum download speed for its broadband Internet customers to 3 megabits per second from 2mbps. In October, it began offering video-on-demand service to broadband customers through a relationship with Movielink.
Where is this video on demand for RR? I went to Movielink and was rudely told that I had a "terrible" browser...Mozilla is terrible???? Said I was required to use IE...so, I reluctantly fired up IE and went there and was asked to allow about 10,000 cookies including third party nasty ones. When I declined, I wasn't even allowed to look at the site! That is terrible. I might be willing to allow cookies if could first look at the site and the prices and see if I liked the site and might use it!
It is garbage like this this makes Road Runner not competitive. I never use the RR home page and the new one is awful. No improvement...just has a lot junk on it. I would be VERY interested in video on demand on my PC though. As far as I could see, what is at Movielink is not video on demand as you download and save the movie to your hard drive. That is not on demand..on demand is streaming video ...like Intertainer (or the tv channels on Winamp) before Time Warner and others ran them out of business. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." 1 edit | From my understanding Video On demand is not an internet service, it is available through your digital cable television. You can tune in to over 50 different channels or so. On each channel there is a list of 20-100 different programs you can watch whenever you want, commercial free, you can also pause, stop, rewind, fast forward through the program. For Example, on HBO in Demand say you missed the Fouth Season of "OZ" you can tune into HBO on demand and watch each episode of Season Four when you want, at your own pace. -- Best Regards,

| reply to whatever8 No, Time Warner is offering movies on demand on your PC through a partnership with MovieLink. This has been planned for ages and TW, Sony, major Hollywood movie studios, etc banded together to get rid of Intertainer which was offering movies on demand via streaming on WMP version 9. TW, Sony, et al...were just in the planning stages then and were afraid Intertainer would get all the customers so they ran them out business by suddenly raising the charges to Intertainer to outrageous amounts for the movies and thus Intertainer couldn't make a profit, had to close its site and now a huge lawsuit is pending against the companies that founded Movielink.
What I want to know is where is the supposedly special charge for RR customers who get movies on demand from Movielink? The article I quoted said that back in October RR moved to make this offer to its customers...I haven't seen any offer special to RR customers for Movielink. Plus, Movielink has not been, in the past, true video on demand. It doesn't stream the movie like Intertainer did the instant you pay for it it and demand it with the ability to pause, stop for one-half hour I think it was, etc.
Movielink has been letting the customer pay for the movie, then download the movie to their hard drive and then you have 30 days in which to watch it...something like that. That is not true on demand video. I wanted to know if Movielink was now (because of this TW offer to its RR customers) offering true video on demand via streaming. I also want to know how much savings you get on the movie rental if you are an RR customer as opposed to anyone else. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." Konaguy Live From Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Premium join:2000-10-21 Kailua Kona, HI | I personally have my doubts about streaming video of movies frankly. If I were interested I would rather download the movie I paid for instead of streamed and watch them on my computer. |

| Well, I watched a few on Intertainer and they were great and that was on my old W98SE computer on my 17 inch Trinitron. Have you been watching streaming tv on Winamp 5? I watched North Carolina University Public tv last night. It was perfect picture, etc. A streaming movie would be fantastic on my new box and 19" digital LCD monitor. I don't want to download the movie...takes time. On demand means NOW..instantly....not after you download it. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." | What if your power konks out, or your internet connection goes down/gets congested. All perfects examples why streaming doesn't really interest me. Plus I haven't been terribly impressed with the streaming video I have seen thus far. Thus I would rather download the movies I pay for. |

| Evidently the new RR webpage is going to be launched Wednesday here in Hawaii. Also what mentioned here »NEWS: New exciting changes coming to RR! is similiar to what I read that there going to be including security software for RR customers. |

| Do you mean the new national RR page? It is already operable. Or do you mean Oceanic is launching a new local RR page?
That security software is available to anyone who wants it. You don't have to be an RR customer. It's from Microsoft. I don't want a software firewall and I already have antivirus that I am happy with now that I got rid of that infernal NAV...had to manually clean the registry and my files to get it all off. I have my NOD32 on the box now (the version that doesn't cause the problem at shutdown for XP Pro users). -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." | reply to whatever8 Well...whatever...as the poll and discussion here points out...no one gives a $#** about broadband portals. We hate them and avoid them like the plague. There is so much RR could do that would be useful for the user....but they have their heads in the sand and still stubbornly think that redesigning their portal will get them a lot of new customers and make them competitive with DSL. That is a no go.
RR needs to forget about their portal, about "free" av and firewall which anyone can get free from Microsoft and instead offer something that will keep their customers and that something is lower price to match DSL which is $15 a month cheaper here. I think a lot of users have RR because Verizon hasn't put DSL in their area, but as Verizon does this then more people will go with DSL. My friends here in Hilo who have dialup would never consider RR because it is so much more expensive than is DSL. They are choosing DSL. RR needs to lower their prices and forget about the junk. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." The new security software is NOT a Microsoft product. Its from Computer Associates.
It is a firewall, antivirus program, pop-up blocker and parental control software all rolled up in one. And RR is offering this for free to its customers only. -- i\am/canadian |

The catch is you need to sign up for Verizon's long distance plan if you want to pay that 29.95 a month for the 768/128 DSL circuit. »www22.verizon.com/forhomedsl/cha···wifi.asp |

Mele20 Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI | It's not 768 and why wouldn't you already have Verizon's web long distance? There is nothing cheaper. |

1 edit | What is it then ? I checked Verizons website if your line qualifies for 1.5Mbps/128 that will what you'll get. If it doesn't you will get 768/128.
On top of it you will have to pay for the voice part of the phone line [When I had a phone line it was approximately 25.00 a month]. The DSL charge doesn't include your landline. I even asked Verizon about this. |

| I don't know anyone who doesn't have a land line even if he/she has a wireless phone so you are already paying for the voice part. I wouldn't want DSL, if I was not within the correct distance which would give me 1500, if I had another broadband choice. If I had only the choice of dialup or 768 then I would gladly take the 768. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." I haven't had a landline in three years. I have a cell. Most of my friends and the people I know have also traded in their landlines for cells. I doesn't make sense not to. -- i\am/canadian |
