| Yes and we should all have IDS systems
Ok either put the security on the side of the ISP or shut up!
If someone spends $99.99 to protect their home computer that should be enough, either Micro$oft or the ISP's need to get to work.
If a security venodor has that to say about a home product, then they have work to do. |

Microsoft (not Micro$oft, dolt) is getting to work. SP2 will be a nice leap in security. It will make sure that Joe User has his firewall enabled, and Automatic Updates turned on. |

| reply to The Beer Ok so let me get this straight...
My 73 year old grandmother who owns a spanking new Dell computer, behind a linksys firewall should go out and get some system security training?
Why should she? She bought the latest and greatest Dell PC with the latest and greatest service pack out there pre-installed. (Then I applied the 15 patches and manually turned auto update on)
THEN I went out and installed AVG antivirus on her machine (Since I think it's the last one that does not require yearly subs, she does live 500 miles away this needs autopilot)
Then she paid another $100 for the darn hardware firewall.
Then she pays $55/mo for the cable internet connection, so please tell me why SHE should have to be in charge of the security.
She paid the people to connect her to the internet, she paid for the hardware firewall and has the most modern OS out there, why should SHE worry about security?
"Industries best practices" says she is protected, for a firewall company to step forward and tell her to buy more than can shove it where the sun don't shine.
There should just be a darn "Grandma" Checkbox, lock me down I don't care and will not notice.
BTW ZoboFlobby is a MCSE and A CISSP |

| reply to weedahoe I have been on the technical side of computers since 1957 and am still having a problem in just TRYING TO KEEP UP.
I don't think there is any way the normal computer user has any idea on what security is all about.
Too much is changing so fast I don't see how anyone can really keep up. I'm really surprised there aren't more problems than there are. Then again, most users will just reboot and start over when they have a problem. If that doesn't work, FORMAT.
I really feel sorry for the majority since they don't have a clue and never will. |
