I've got a PIII laptop(Dell), running WinME, that something happened to free Zonealarm, and it locks up the machine when Zonealarm starts. I've tried everything to stop Zonealarm from starting, but Safe mode doesn't let me delete it. Anybody have any idea where it starts from, registry, Win.ini, or where? I think the install of ME is basically OK, but Zonealarm is FUBAR. Please help. -- Using ET photons (Solar Power) to search for ET. |

Why not just un-install zone alarm and re-install it?

But shouldn't you be able to F8 into safe mode and get to the desktop, maybe turn off vsmon or at least do a system restore, I think ME has that. -- Scotch is a spirit to be savored and investigated. |

May be of some help in resolving your problem.
"I've tried everything to stop ZoneAlarm from starting"
Only do this when not connected to the internet. Connecting to the net using any type of connection without a firewall or router in place is a good way to get a worm fast nowadays. |

Correct, I could only get the computer to boot in safe mode, but was able to delete files and edit the registry to remove all traces of Zonealarm. I'm undecided whether I will reinstall it yet. The affected computer runs behind a Freesco router, and the firewall seems to knock out most stuff. Strangely, Norton AV autoprotect was also turned off, so I'm leaning toward a Trojan. Had some problems staaying online last night, but have them fixed now, and hope to download The Cleaner tonight to check it out. Again, many thanks all. -- Using ET photons (Solar Power) to search for ET. |
