I have two comments. No, three! No, two comments and two questions.

Question: How did this interesting thread fall down to page 7? We fix it...

You got me on this one... I figured everyone would be jumping on this one. The ping plot picture speaks a thousand words. If anyone needs any help obtaining the firmware, setting up the router's bandwidth shapping, etc., just let me know. PM me if you like but I rather do it out in the forum so everyone else can learn. Thats what this all about right?

If you do it on your own make sure use the .7 firmware from Sveasoft. In the .6 firmware, the bandwidth shapping was accidentally broken. If you are using a version 2.0 of the WRT54G you will need a newer unreleased(I have it though) version that deals with the hardware change between the 1.0/1.1 and 2.0 versions of the WRT54G. It may sound hard but its real simple!

Another bonus is you can setup static DHCP addresses with the modified firmware. Just enter in the IP, the MAC, and name of the device and it will ALWAYS pick up the same IP from DHCP. Pretty cool if you ask me!

I recently purchased the BEFSR81 and I'm sending it back after reading this thread. But, one possible solution using the BEFSR81 is to use it strictly as a switch (i.e. not as the router connected to your Cable/DSL modem). This of course requires that you use another box for your router. The BEFSR81 could be connected to this other router on port 1, the VOIP ATA could be connected on port 2, and all other devices could hang off port 3 (i.e. another switch). Ports 1 and 2 could be given a high priority (or perhaps just port 2) and port 3 could be assigned a low priority. In this configuration, perhaps the BEFSR81 would do a decent job of prioritized traffic from your ATA to your router ahead of traffic from your other devices.

Just a thought (I've already sent mine back so I can't test it).

digiblur - I am planning on buying one of the WRT54G boxes this week given the price and a recent gift card that I have for Best Buy. Anyway, I, along with others, would appreciate a step by step procedure for downloading, installing the firmware, provisioning the router for giving priority to the VOIP adapter IP/port. My current config is 2 wired PC, a wired print server, 2 wireless PCs and my BVD adapter. I also would like to be able to remote my current 802.11b wireless router as an access point if possible.

Thanks much in advance for your offer of help and direction.

This is a good suggestion that I did actually try some time ago. Given Linksys' claims that the QoS only applies to the LAN ports, one might suspect this would work. I was not able to get any better results doing this, but I would be interested in knowing if it works for anyone else.

Just bringing this back to the top of the heap in hopes that 'digiblur' can help us out with instructions for downloading, installing and configuring the firmware for QOS capability in the WRT54G.

I bought one today. $79.00 A/R @ Best Buy

Flashing the firmware was a snap! All I did was download the proper firmware at the site mentioned here, unzipped it to the desktop, set up the router through a wired LAN connection (always a good idea; NEVER update firmware with a wireless connection!), entered setup, went to 'update firmware' and did it.

Do a long reset, put in the parameters and you're done!

I'm setting a low priority for Kazaa.

I'm still hanging in there with you guys. Just been busy... I check this thread everyday or two but I haven't seen anyone asking for help yet. I'm planning on making a guide on the evening of 1/27 with a free screen shots.

Basically here is the run down.

1. Download the the firmware here: »ftp://ftp.sveasoft.com/pub/Satori_v2_2···.bin.zip

If you have a V2(on bottom tag of the router) of the WRT54G you will need the Satori pre2 for the bandwidth management to work. PM me for this.

2. Unextract it.

3. Connect the PC to the router that will be doing the flashing to one of the four WAN ports.

4. Get an IP and go to the router configuration at »192.168.1.1

5. Click on the administration tab in the router setup and page. Click on the upgrade firmware.

6. Browse to the unextract firmware file and flash the router.

7. Do NOT disturb the router. It will change to an upgrade successful when it is finished.

8. Now hold down the reset button on the back for at least 8-10 seconds while you watch the router.

9. You should see the router reset and reboot, let go of the reset. This will make sure you have a clean NVRAM.

10. Go into the router and configure your ISP settings(DHCP, PPPOE, etc).

11. Either disable the wireless portion or turn on some sort of encryption.

12. Click on the administration tab

13. Enable "Bandwidth Mgmt".

14. Enable "Telnet"

15. Do not disable or enable anything else unless you are positive what you are doing.

16. If you decided to use the "static dhcp" option in the firmware be aware: Currently in the Satori-pre1 release the "static DHCP" address box entries will become messed up looking if you put more than one address. This has been fixed in the Satori-pre2.

17. Hit "Save Settings"

18. The management page will come back up. You will now notice more options under the "Bandwidth Mgmt" portion.

19. You will now need to fill in the uplink and downlink settings that your ISP gives you (don't forget PPPOE overhead if you use it). I have a 3000/256 cable connection and have been happy with setting the downlink to 2800 and the uplink to 228 just be on the safe side.

20. I do not use the "Low Priority Source Netmasks:" or "Low Priority Dest Netmasks:". I just use the low priority ports. Its not like just putting in the IP and thats it. You have to put in a netmask as follows: If you want just 192.168.1.104 then put in 192.168.1.104/32
/32 for one IP
/30 for 4 ips
/28 for 16 ips
/26 for 64 ips
/24 for 256 ips

21. For now I put in a few low priority ports that are used for upload on my home network, ex: 6881 6882 6883 6884 21 119 4662 4672 110 25

I copied the same set of ports to my "Low Priority Source Ports" and destination ports just be on the safe side.

You may use others, but its never my downloading that kills my VOIP its the uploading to newsgroups, emails, P2P, uploading FTP, etc.

24. Hit the Save Settings and make sure your settings are still there.

25. Now here is the big part. Actually the settings are set in the router but they are not in effect right now. We will need to reboot the router. Either unplug the sucker and plug it back in or use the easy way as follows:

26. Go to a command prompt. If your router ip is still at 192.168.1.1 type in:

telnet 192.168.1.1

The router should come up. Type in:

reboot

You should see the router drop the telnet section and reboot.

27. Sit back...upload a full CD's worth of files at full stream via FTP while you sit on the VOIP with talking away.

Just remember to reboot the router anytime you make adjustments to the bandwidth management.

The author, Sveasoft, aka James Ewing, is making great strides and is always adding new stuff to the WRT54G. I constantly try to keep up with his firmware and will report back to here when new verions come out.

Whew! It may sound like a lot but its real easy. I am enjoying mine day by day.

Digiblur:
Do you know what relative weights the Wonder Shaper algorithm applies to the high priority and low priority ports? In your example of 228 kbps upload bandwidth, I am curious what the minimum bandwidth the normal priority ports (including VoIP, I guess) will get without starving the low priority port applications?
Thanks.

Does anyone know if you can do Wireless Intranet QoS? I wanted to set my ATA(and cordless base station) away from my router using a wireless bridge(WET11), but found that my main pc(set up wirelessly as well) would saturate the wireless link when transferring files to another computer(wireline)on the network. So if I could somehow guarantee, say by Mac address, 90 kb/s for the bridge or give it a higher priority that would be grand. Does anyone know if the QOS on Sveasofts firmware can do this?

Sorry if I've made this confusing.

I have not got bandwidth management fully functioning on my LAN yet, but I think what you are wanting to do is "doable" with this firmware. You can specify by IP address I think.

OK, I went to Sveasoft and it looks like it will do the trick. Wish I hadn't bought the D-Link Di-624 now, guess I'll have to sell it on ebay.

Well, I received my WRT54G today and have the new firmware (pre2) up and running. I enabled "Bandwidth Management" with the following settings:

- WAN is selected
- 0 kbps Uplink and Downlink (I'm assuming setting these to zero tells the router to not cap upload and download speeds)
- Low priority source netmasks: 192.168.1.128/25
- Low priority destination netmasks: 192.168.1.128/25
- Low priority source ports:
- Low priority destination ports:

In addition, I've configured the DHCP server to give out addresses starting at 192.168.1.128 (in the low priority subnet). And, I've configured static allocations of 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 for my voicepulse (sipura) and vonage (motorola) ATAs...these are not in the low priority subnet.

I'm not sure this configuration is correct (anyone have any link to docs on how these settings work?)...but if it works like I would expect, then traffic to and from my ATA devices through the WAN port on the WRT54G should get prioritized over other traffic moving over the WAN port.

I haven't actually tested the performance of the phone during heavy u/l and d/l activity. It would be nice if there was some more reliable (and less subjective) means to verify that the ATA traffic is getting prioritized over the other traffic. Anyone know a good way to test that? Perhaps there's some logging or monitoring tool in the Sveasoft firmware that will do the trick?

From what I've read you should set your uplink and downlink speeds so it knows when to throttle back the upload speeds. Try it with and without....just remember to reboot the router in between each settings. Either reboot via telnet or unplugging the sucker.

OK - so I got the WRT54G v1.1 as well, downloaded and installed Satori_v2_2.00.8.7sv-pre1.bni and have it configured as such:
- WAN is selected
- 2800/228 kbps Downlink and Uplink since I have 3000/256 cable
- Low priority source netmasks: {empty}
- Low priority destination netmasks: {empty}
- Low priority source ports: 6881 6882 6883 6884 21 119 4662 4672 110 25
- Low priority destination ports: 6881 6882 6883 6884 21 119 4662 4672 110 25

The problem is when I have it set this way and bandwidth enabled my speedtests indicate 181/191 or something really BAD; when I disable bandwidth management (rebooting between changes), my DL and UL go back to 3000/256 or so.

Thoughts? What might I have set incorrectly? TIA!

Just wondering who else does the firmware for these?

Is Seasoft (Not saying they are bad) the only ones doing this?

The QOS is nice however what I really want is a IPSEC Server like the BEFVP41.
