Common sense and awareness.

The only problem with common sense, is that its not all that common.

Broadband reports as far as I can say. I have already had firewall, AV and anti adware.
All the new stuff I have learned here.

I need spybot s&d to get rid of useage traces.

I need ZA free. It's the best firewall. Not interested in kerio, it looks to convoluted compared to ZA. I don't like NIS, it is weak protection IMO. I don't like Sygate, it needs NDIS to run, and I got cracked using it over and over again.

I need Process guard free. To guard ZA free.

I need AVG anti virus free. It's resident is simpler then Avast anti virus IMO. And it's scanner is WAY faster then NAV IMO.

On a side note. I don't see much people using Process guard free. Do you ? And why don't u. It's free.

I don't know if it's possible to narrow it down to just 1
Many programs work well together and when used together make for a very secure setup. I would also add the following to the list:

SpywareGuard
ScriptSentry
IE-Spyads

Common sense and awareness.

An actual product?
Spybot S&D - logs are quite handy and informative.

Web tools
BBR, DNSSTUFF

Many other good ones, including the good folks here and many friends who are always exploring new horizons (Esp. J.R. in UA - an up and coming Linux guy who is passing on his experiences to me!)

Ill knock on wood, but the only security tools that actually showed me anything I already didn't know about my own personal box were CWS & HJT during the past year.

Re: What was the best free security tool in 2003?

Good point, osmethnee. The people who post on this board are way more knowledgeable that the "average joe", and the tools they see as necessary are probably completely unknown to the everyday computer owner.

As an average "jane", I'd have to say the eTrust offer, because it gave me a complete suite of protection that took absolutely no brains to set up. For the average person who has minimal knowledge of AV and FW issues, something that's going to give them the most coverage that they're probably ever going to put on their computer anyway, winds up protecting the rest of us. Since it's all in one suite, they don't have to go searching around for separate programs.

Spyware and adware, while annoying, don't really harm anything. The average person, speaking from observations of family and friends, have absolutely no idea what they are and wouldn't know what to put on their systems to eliminate them. But they have heard of computer viruses and know that they should do "something" to protect their computer.

Too many people out there still have the expired AV program that came with their computer, have never updated the definitions, and still think that they are protected. That might be a problem with eTrust when the free year expires, but hopefully by that time they'll be more aware of the dangers to their computer. Personally, I put free AV & FW programs on my parents' computer and set them to auto-update because I know they'll never remember to either renew or update.

I think you should clarify what you're asking. Do you really want to know which tool most "boosted up security [for the] average joe using computers and the internet", which tool was most useful to the readers of this forum (non-average joes, for sure!) or which was the best tool that the readers of this forum added to their toolbox in 2003?

All are good questions, but each will have very different answers...

I'd have to say ZA, 'cause for the most part it helps keep out much of the other crap.

Agreed, and the Etrust offer.
Very good move by MS & CA IMO.

I have a suggestion!

What if I delete this poll, and we simply collect a list of all kinds of free security products here and THEN make a new poll that has all those gizmos inside, so that we can get REALLY BIG poll?

(I seem to forget several program because I dont use them myself, sorry about that)
