Good 80211.g strength, but no connection?

My son's computer is a Dell with a no-name 80211.g PCI card. My Mac has a Netgear 80211.g router. He's had great wireless internet, but its suddenly stopped working. It shows excellent 54mpbs strength, but he can't browse the Internet, no email, etc. Any idea why that would be?? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Can he ping the upstream router? Check "winipcfg" and/or "ipconfig /all" and make sure the IP address and subnet mask is what it should be. Sound like he might not be getting an IP address from the DHCP if the client is so configured.

Lighthouse, thanks for your response, but I'm afraid I have no idea how to do the things you suggested. Do you have simpler language for a noob?

Well, OK. First go to a command prompt and type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (without the quotes). the x's are the ip address of the router. Then, go to a command prompt again and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes). Take a screen shot and post it to the forum so we can see what you have.

Maybe you can help me. I recently upgraded my old internal DSL modem to the 2wire 1000sw wireless router/modem/firewall. I have SBC service. The system tied with the access point is working fine with default settings. I installed a d-link dwl-520 into a machine with winMe and configured it. I get a good signal from the ap but can't connect to it,the network or anything. I can't ping the router (or anything else) and the ap machine doesn't see the other machine either. I have tried giving the d-link machine a static ip, and not using encryption, and nothing works yet. Could anyone please help?

Has he just installed any Norton software? Internet Security package perhaps?
