2 edits | Adding a hardrive to DVR
I'm wondering if it would be possible to get the new DVR boxes to recognize an external USB hardrive? Don't have the money to go buy one any time soon. But in theory would the new box actually recognize and allow for storage to such a drive? Would this work for a FireWire enabled external drive as well? The box has both USB and FireWire inputs / outputs.
The box has VCR support of course. But has anyone tried burning a recorded program to a DVD recorder yet? If this works and works smoothly - it'll definitely move up our plans for purchasing one.
Also in my previous post on the subject. I never got a full answer to a question. The installer the other day who came to troubleshoot my flip bar issue. Seemed to state that any tv - meaning a good ole regular NTSC model - could receive the HDTV stations as long as they had the proper cable box. They would just have lower quality.
This seems odd to me. It's always been my understanding that only an EDTV or HDTV compatible model could process and accept an HDTV signal. The EDTV would of course process the signal at a much lower quality. I'd be interested to know 1 if I'm mistaken in this belief. Or 2 why the situation is different when using one of the new Motorola cable boxes. -- Test Your Security Team Z Member Cable Modem Diagnostics InsightBB 3000/384 XP PRO |

| No newsgroups. Normally there to much of a frustrating read. I need to check some of the audio visual forums. The install manual for the box offers no real clue. I was just hoping someone from Insight might chime in. To save me the hassle of having to hunt the information. Most of my questions are specific to the Motorola box. Not sure how many other cable companies are using this box.
The signal receive question is something I could test. But don't feel like dragging the box down to the older 20 or so year RCA. If I had cash to burn I could buy an external drive as well and test things. But cash to burn isn't something this household has unfortunately.
The questions are just out curiosity. It's always nice to know what hardware can and can't do. And to try and take it to it's limits. -- Test Your Security Team Z Member Cable Modem Diagnostics InsightBB 3000/384 XP PRO |

1 edit | You can record HD off cable with the right equipment, it's just that no one's selling it yet. (Motorola 6208, Scientific Atlanta 8000HD, supposedly will start rolling out late this year.) Firewire will also eventually appear on cable boxes pending FCC approval of an agreement reached last year between movie studios and cable operators.
Sure there are. Most of the newer DirecTV HD receivers have DVI/HDCP output. The HDCP is kind of irrelevant anyway since you wouldn't be able to record the volume of data DVI spits out anyway. It's only feasible to record compressed data over Firewire.
There are no HD PVRs other than the Zenith HDR230 on the market yet. The 230 is an OTA digital only device. Their 330 model due later this year supposedly also handles unscrambled QAM, so could record some HD channels off cable (but not HBO/Showtime type channels, which are usually scrambled, and ESPN would likely also be scrambled). The Motorola/SA boxes are better bets for cable HD recording.
For recording ESPNHD, the only people who are likely able to do it now are those with the 169time hacked DTC100 boxes and a D-VHS deck. Some people have integrated HDTVs that receive unscrambled QAM and can get ESPN that way have experimented with recording this but I haven't heard of success stories yet.

Very old post. But some of it may still be relevant.
"It's technical. In order to pack the increased amount of data to store HD onto the same sized disc, they had to go to shorter wavelength blue lasers rather than the red used with current DVD. They've also been fighting over which blue laser format to use, Sony's Blu-ray or a competing "AOD" spec backed by Toshiba & others. AOD recently won the DVD forum's decision as the official DVD successor, though of course Sony could still try to plow ahead with their format.
And certainly there are copyright issues(not "copywrite"; think "right to copy") to be hashed out."
