| Good Cat 5 prices?
Hi!
I was going to wire my house for networking. I when to CompUSA and they were selling CAT-5 cable (Belkin-250Ft. in a box) for $100. Is that a good price?
That comes out to $0.40 per foot. Or maybe I should try a hardware store like Home Depot. Do they sell CAT-5 cable?
I know they sell power cable and other stuff. Can I just get any type? i.e. 8 wire cable [text was edited by author 2001-06-01 16:52:48] |

I just got back from Home Depot. Could not find any cable labeled CAT-5. Can I just buy any 8 wire cable or does it have to say CAT-5? |

| reply to Josh Kirby1 Is it twisted pair and does it comply with the color codes for the cat five cables? That is a signal it maybe the same. But cat 3 cables will not work well for a cat 5 setup. Wrong resistance and frequency compatibility with some cable types. So be careful --

Thanks for the info. I will go back tommorrow and look around some more. I might have looked in the wrong section.
In any case I will be sure it says CAT-5 or CAT-5E before I buy. Thanks again. |

| reply to Josh Kirby1 When I went to Home Depot I asked a couple employees if the sell networking cable, and both of them say no, so don't ask for Network cable, just go to the section where they have the Phone cable, and you will seed the boxes that say, CAT5 and CAT5E, get any of these, the last time I was there, the CAT5E was cheaper almost half off the the regular CAT5, go figure, if you can get CAT5E it is better quality and it supports speeds up to 1gig. |

| Hi!
Thanks for the info, everyone. Basically, I will have only one long run from my upstairs Router to basement switch/hub. The rest will be short runs to each computer (30 ft or less). Right now it will support my DSL, so only about 640K of data flow. |

| reply to Josh Kirby1 Not the Dsl speed the network speed matters
It does not matter what the speed you are using is it is the speed of the actual network that is the factor. They have a different frequency range for the 10mbps and the 100mbps networks. The Hubs and switched hubs or routers with hubs built in have a crystal for the frequency in side just like a radio transmitter and that determines what cable types you need. The cat 5 , cat5e, 350 and 1meg need to have a certain type of cable to handle the different carrier signals which pass through it. Cat 3 or non certified cables may not work or you may loose the signal or the data may not transfer properly/corrupted over a wrong type of cable. --

Hi
Let me just give you one small tip on the cable install that seems not to have been mentioned. Do not bend the cable 90-degrees in corners and do not staple them to the walls or stretch the cable in any way. Generally speaking, cramped, stretched, pinched or nicked cables will only give you trouble.
Get UTP CAT5 or CAT5E and the max run is 100 meters.
Have fun and good luck. |

| reply to Josh Kirby1 I'll just add to the recommendation to get CAT5e if at all possible. If you're wiring your home for the long run, it most certainly will come in handy a few years down the road. All of the (really) high speed protocols that are contenders for the "10/100 twisted-pair Ethernet replacement" are based on CAT5e. |

| Or what you can do is look in your Yellow Pages under cable and start calling..If you have a Greybar in your town or something similar then that is what you will want to do. I was recently in a Town Called Golden Which is just outside of a smaller town Called Denver and I need some cables and called a manufactuer that had some spare "small" pieces that worked perfect for me. | reply to Josh Kirby1 If you are running network cables, I would not use anything less than CAT5, did that once and the network cards just would not sync up with the hubs.
A good place to order from (where I get all my cable) is CSC (Communication Supply Corporation) here in Illinois.
They have good prices on CAT5 cable and can usually cut to fit.
You can reach them at (630)221-6400 and just ask for sales.
If you live in IL (for anyone else in this group) they are located in Carol Stream and will allow you to pick up an order instead of ship.
I have ALWAYS had great service with them, plus their shipping process is pretty quick. -- Just my opinion..Take it or leave it

| reply to Josh Kirby1 There is no doubt that CompUSA will take you for a ride on their cable. You will probably find the best deals online with a "more you buy the more you save" type of deal.
Try this link, here you can get something on the order of $0.16 per FT and maybe less. »www.pricegrabber.com/search_attr···pup1_att r=Category&popup1_attr_id%5B%5D=32&ut=8d9b6bac8db4d621
Do you have any experience installing and configuring this type of cable? |
