 | RCN Chicago officially block pings + lame speed Well, RCN Chicago confirmed to me today that they are blocking ICMP traffic (ping, tracert, and others) for some so called security reasons. ???
It took me a week to get them to admit to it. They never seem to want to accept that they may have problems. It is always the customer's fault. - reboot your computer/ modem => Ok, I'll do that - you have a virus on all of your computers even the live linux CD => No, I don't. All computers are scanned. The live CD has no virus either (read only media)... - you are using a router => No, I am not currently (direct connection to modem) - it is zonealarm => Zonealarm has been disabled - we will charge you $100 if a technician get there and it is not the modem => please do...
I explained to them that it is killing the service. 1. my speed is only 576 kbps down/ 176 kbps up (less than 25% of what others are getting). 2. not having ICMP traffic simply prohibit other internet usage (like probing and monitoring your remote server over the web, getting any type of internet network information...)
I told them that all I can do really right now is just surf the web (which is by the way slower than my old Comcast service). Their (RCN Chicago) response to me is that they only provide internet surfing service. So, as long as I can surf the web, they are providing me with the service I am paying for.
The only reason I still have the service at this point is because I am paying $19 a month for 4 months (compared to $56 I would have to pay with comcast as an existing customer).
As people elsewere are getting 4 times my speed, RCN Chicago is simply happy with the service they are providing me. Well I am not happy at all! |

 | Oh yeah, everyone in Chicago, please start calling RCN and complain to the harassment level. That's the only way we will get what we are paying for.
Also, mega speed 3000/800 will only hit Chicago, if ever, at the earliest in September 2004. Let's get the 1500/256 promised first before we start dreaming... buff! |
|
 | I had quite a few problems in the last couple of days. It has something to do with the upgrade of the speed. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
As some other users on the forums also had confirmed - the higher speed is here for some of us.
Currently I am running around 2400/700, up from 1300/220 a few days ago.
Good luck with your problem, and hopefully it will be behind you soon. |

 | I am in downtown Chicago near the lake. They are rolling out the higher speed from this area first. You may not have the higher speed yet, but hopefully it will be soon. My speed now is about 2600/700, versus 1200/220 not too long ago. |

Yes, because we all know that calling Technical Support and screaming at them will get the job done. Wake up. |

 | Yes, it will. The more threat of losing customers, the more interest they have to fix things. |

 | OR..They will just seel you off like they are doing to us in SENY. |

Re: RCN Chicago officially block pings + lame spee you could try to telnet out, if they aren't blocking that too. this will let you do the tests needed. also, you could use the tools here to check line quality of the servers you need to keep track of. -- |

I wish I could switch, my building employed a BULK deal with RCN which is not due to expire until 2006 or 2008 I believe..
In other things.. I see RCN has removed any reference to Chicago being upgrade to it's "Digital Vision" Service.
I contacted the customer rep for my building: "Jacob @ 312-287-5177" and his response to my asking when we were slated for digital/net speed increase was.. "I don't know"
sigh.. --

 | reply to speed_spec Hey, what's the upload speed on comcast?
I care more about that than the download speed. |

2 edits | Re: RCN Chicago officially block pings + lame spee Comcast's upload is capped at 256 for standard service and 384 for the home networking product ( »homenetworking.comcast.net ).
Download speeds are 3300 for standard service and 4300 for home networking (actual caps.) Some areas have traffic shaping, some areas don't. Kinda hit or miss. I don't have it but use software to force traffic shaping. -- My New Webpage: »www.danboy.com |

Re: RCN Chicago officially block pings + lame speed Good news --
Just saw that our service has been upgraded to the 3mb connection -- anyone also see a speed increase? |
|
 | Great news! Which zip code are you in by the way? Just to track how long it might take to get up to Andersonville and Edgewater. Or maybe when I get home later this morning - the speeds will have miraculously jumped?? -- I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy |

beven join:2002-01-27 Fox River Grove, IL | reply to speed_spec I'm in Old Town/River North...and this all came by surprise.
I did contact RCN Tech Support and they stated that they didn't have any information in their systems about an upgrade, nor could they give any information about any price increases....too good to be true?
Your Throughput

In the locations that have been fully converted the 3 and 5 meg offerings are available but in the legacy areas they are still tied to the old setup and limits for a number of reasons. Don't bother asking "When will mine be upgraded" as I can't really answer that question unfortunately. I can say though that once your default gateway changes to something labeled 'BSR' and is no longer cmts or ubr the higher rates become available. On the old system yes it still has ICMP filters installed for a number of reasons however again the new system does not.
Now regarding the ICMP filtering even the new systems and actually RCN wide does have something that will dynamically install filters on individuals who generate massive amounts of ICMP traffic. IE if you turn around and ping several different hosts in a short amount of time you may get caught in this filter. Although you should be getting much better speeds than you currently are if you want to message or email me the mac address of the modem I'm more than happy to look into it and see what's going on there. -- Bryan Laird Senior Manager RCN Cablemodem Operations |
