[XP] "Server" service hangs on boot - 15 min delay

OK.. This one has me stumped.. The 'Server' (lanmanerver) service on my XP machine has begun to hang at startup.. System Event Log reports a Event 7022 - The Server service hung on starting. This causes the machine to take just about 15 minutes to reboot -- I get my wallpaper and mouse pointer, but nothing else for 15 minutes while the service is hung.

Strangely, I can disable the Server service, and it will reboot immediately, without issue. After it reboots, I can manually start the Server service and it starts immediately. Its only when the Server service is set to Automatic or Manual that it gets hung.

Its not a service I can leave disabled -- I have shares on the machine, and the Server service is required for sharing.. Has anyone run into this issue in the past and found a way to correct it? Already tried an in-place repair install of XP, but that didn't help any. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Rick

Check and see if a dependant application or .dll is causing it to hang for that long. What is your netlogon service set to?

Also, are you on a domain, using a login script ot batch file to map drives or set resources/drive?

What is your Service Pack & hotfix level for XP? do you have all the necessary permissions & administrator access set for the server service set both locally and on the server?

You can use Dependancy Walker to see what is waiting for what. get it here:

No. The machine exists in a workgroup.

XP Pro SP1, all critical updates applied to date.

The "Server" service is set to run in the context of the Local System account.. Aside from that, could you be more specific?

Re: [XP] "Server" service hangs on boot - 15 min delay

I found this in a German forum.
It appears to have come from a MS Knowledge Base article, but no link was provided.

-------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
You may experience the following symptoms:
When you start your computer, you may receive a message that states that one or more services did not start.
If other users try to access your computer over the network, they may not be able to locate your computer.
The following event ID message may be logged in the System log in Microsoft Event Viewer:
Event ID: 7022
Source: Service Control Manager

CAUSE
This issue may occur if the Spooler service tries to start before the Server service. This issue may occur if you installed either the Lexmark International Markvision (LexBce) service or the Hewlett-Packard JetAdmin port monitoring software on your computer.

To create this dependency:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedt32, and then click OK.
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler

Click Add Value on the Edit menu.
Type DependOnService in the Value Name box.
Click REG_MULTI_SZ in the Data Type box, and then click OK.
Type LanmanServer in the Data box, and then click OK.
Click Exit on the Registry menu to quit Registry Editor.
Restart your computer.
