{TDPH} A little look into the future.

Currently we have 12 blades running for Project Hope, with 4 separate hosts.
That alone is an incredible accomplishment and something we can all be proud of as a team. Each blade is in the home of the hosts and cumulatively in just a short time period the collective effort of all the blades has moved the project up the stat charts.
Currently, (as of 31 January 2004) the blades for TSC have reached the #17 position on our team. And if we made no additions and taking the current production, it would be in the #2/3 spot by next year. (But we will add too it and it will grow, although I still think it will be some time to challenge Randy and his Farm of crunchers)
The blades for UD have put it in #66 spot on our team as of 31 January 2004.
At current production I can see it possibly making it into the top 20 on the team the same time next year at current point production rate.
This is simply amazing, and is something we should all be proud of.
But should we just stop and be happy for all that we have accomplished?

I guess we can do that, but I think the majority of members here that participate in this project would think differently and would want us too keep going and growing.
So I wanted to take time in this post to look into my crystal ball and tell everyone what I see for upcoming year.

First thing that I see happening is looking into possibly getting new blades.
And what I mean by new blades is that we need to examine the current blades we have and see if we need to make improvements to them.
When this project started, the blades we currently have were great and the best at that time.
But prices drop and improvements to computers are made daily. So for us too keep up to date we also must stay current with technology.
In this past year our blades have been averaging roughly $300 per blade. So this is the price range I would like to look at possibly what we are shooting for if we are to make “improvements” to our current blade set up. (You can find what we are currently using in the blades by going to this page: »www.tdprojecthope.com/Infomation_Pro.html

Another idea I had was too make improvements to our current blades, which are hosted by our current hosts. The blades I wanted to focus on were the UD blades. And the improvement I had in my mind was possibly adding more ram to the blades.
Unlike the TSC blades, which more ram won’t make a difference, in the UD project and blades it can make a major impact on the scores. Since more ram will mean a higher overall score for the UD blades it might make sense for us to add for (higher memory amount to those blades) of course we will have to see just how much ram those blades can accept and if it will be worth it. This is an option for us to go with.
If we decide to go with that option, we can always use the ram in those blades for future TSC blades. (Again these ideas are something that we can discuss more in detail in our TDPH forum, I’m kind of just throwing them out there and something I can possibly see happening down the road).

Since the start of the project we have made incredible progress, we now have our own merchandise: »www.cafeshops.com/tdph and all the profits from that go directly back into this project.
We have our own own Identification Number(EIN): »I Am Official
This is not even to mention our own TDPH forum that is held here »tdprojecthope.com/forum/ and if I may add, has seen considerable improvements and additions by Peter who has done an incredible job with all the latest updates and additions to the site.
Another thing I can see happening is adding more hosts to this project. And we will start looking at potential hosts as soon as we can look into some of the issues I have already mentioned. At the moment our current hosts need a small break. And although the current hosts always have the option to add more blades in the future, we feel best that at this time we look at possibly adding a host or two. So if you feel that you are up to the commitment of hosting a blade, this soon will be available.
When we first started the project we were taking volunteers for hosts, since then I have had a number of people come and as me if they could host a blade or two or in some cases even more if possible. So when the time comes for us to look into more hosts if we have more then are required we will let the current project members choose who they feel is best to host. This in my opinion is probably the best course of action since the current members have the most invested in this project and probably are regular visitors to the Team Discovery forum. Too me it just seems the most democratic and fair way to go about doing this. But again we can look into this when the time for more hosts comes up.

Currently we have $1200 in our account, but with improvements and possible addition of more blades, that money can go very quickly. So I can see us possibly having some sort of fund drive to add money to this account as we have in the past.

In the next year I can also see a changing of the guard on the board to some extent.
My personal belief is that everyone who wants to serve on the board should have a chance to do so, and the board members should not just be there just for the sake of having a board. So in saying this, I am also announcing myself stepping down from the chairman position on the one-year mark. (This will be somewhere around April) This will bring in new blood and new ideas to the project. So if you would like to serve on the board as Chairman or any other position that might open up, this will give ample time to think about it and for us to have votes to fill the Chairman position as well as any other position that will be available in April (the one year mark of this project).

These are just some of the changes that I can see coming up for the next year of this project. Some will definitely happen and some might not. For me, it was just important to put down on paper what I see happening for the next year and to give everyone a heads up for what is in store for this great project that we all started.
And now it’s time for me to stop looking into my and open the floor for ideas, comments and suggestions on what you see happening in the next year and beyond.

I'm very happy with all the responses that are coming in on my post.

And I’m even happier that many members are looking into this and looking at our current set up and the future of our project.

First I wanted to share this post that is now up on TDPH:
I'm hoping that the comments/ ideas I have put forward in this post can be carried over to that forum and we can talk more fully about each one.
Whether we take action on something regarding the project or not will greatly affect this.

This is also a great time for me in sharing two instant messages I received regarding this post.
The first was sent to me by Michael a.k.a Matrix.
And he informed me that the Starfire members are also looking into possibly add more blades and looking into renovation on the current blade set up.
I can't help but too think how great this is. That the two clubs can jointly look into ideas on how too improve the blades. The members over at Starfire have a way when it comes to doing tests on specific products and jointly this can only help us. I look forward too any input that we can get from them and our own possible searches.

Secondly I wanted to share another instant I had received. This was taken into attention by this particular post.
So this is possibly something we might need to look into in our current blades.
(I have omitted the name for confidentiality purposes, but it's something we can further discus in our TDPH forum).

"I know I am not a member of Project Hope, but just something I noticed. Your RAM and your CPU are out of synch. You RAM (PC2100 Crucial) runs at 266 MHz, while the CPU's are at 333 MHz. You should look into investing in some PC2700 RAM for your current blades possibly, especially some RAM that can run tight timings. If you keep the RAM and CPU in synch speed wise, you will increase your WU output tremendously. I'm surprised some of the OCer's on your team didn't pick this up yet. Or you could just let me know if someone let you know this already.

Anyway, I look forward to the end of Seti1 so I can switch my fleet over to UD. I started crunching on a few of my slower rigs and have decided to switch my smallish fleet over as soon as it's done.

Best of luck with your project. "

Please keep the info coming in and let’s make the most of what we have and will have in the future

R/Slava

I just wanted to respond to the no need for extra RAM comments. On paper I agree with that. But both groups have worked very hard and I believe they should get all the credit they deserve. A little extra for RAM will give that credit. Two ball teams are always playing for charity. For some reason one team only gets 2 points for every 3 they score. That's just bad for morale. Until that similar situation is fixed in UD, RAM starved crunchers just get about 2 out of 3 points deserved.

This post is meant in a helpfull way...
and this is the way I understand this from the FAQ's...

The "Short Version":
The value of the overall rating is calculated by the following formula. Processor*0.4 + Memory*0.25 + Storage*0.05 + Network*0.3

A 256ram should only provide a UD66 memory rating. In my opionion 256 ram is somewhat pitifull? Even store-bought xp comes with the standard 512. Xp loves ram.

Adding another 256 will increase the memory rating to 133 or a gain of 67. From the above formula...67*.25=17.

Now let's interpolate...from my calculations, the comparison UD device runs "roughly" 19 points per hour. Let's just increase the 100 comparison device by the aforementioned 17--- i.e. 17/100=17%===.17*19pph=an increse of 3.23pph.

For one cruncher, you should gain 3.23*24hrs=78ppd. My understanding is that you are currently running 6 UD crunchers or 78*6=468ppd for an additional 256ram. Pretty neat, but not fantastic, but even 512ram is still pretty pitifull? Geez...think about an increse to 768, that's what I run on my 2400+...and that represents a considerable pph increase. I wish all my machines were 1024.

In my opionion this ram will not increse processing speed by one ioutta, however a large ram increase would be significant for points. The anonymous who mentioned substituting pc2700 may be right on for a processing speed increase????

What about deals? Ram is not very expensive if you watch for deals. I got my 256ram addition for paying only the tax (after rebates). We could watch for deals??

I am primarily a UD cruncher, but also crunch some TSC, so what about fairness? What does this do for TSC? Does the ram increse production for TSC????? Or what would we do in exchange? If you added 512 of ram to each UD cruncher, should TSC deserve an extra cruncher, or would it improve TSC? Questions, questions, questions???

This gets sorta complicated? I would just recommend that all future crunchers are built with 768 or 1024 ram? And that donations are toward that goal? Just my random thoughts??

Please do not think of me as a Bandit, there are no hidden meanings or innuendos here. This long post is merely meant to throw out "food for thought".

Please consider this post in a caring and thoughtfull manner. Your crunching partner...Ray

Hi slava,
Nice post! I think that it would be good to add more hosts (DC projects can never have enough hosts for their blades) and maybe do some upgrades on some of the blades (just to make the most of what is in place).

What I see in the future is the weave of the team tightening up, older members coming back and posting more often, new members realizing what a great thing we have going here, and existing members upgrading their systems to be able to do more for the cause.

It's already happening, I ain't no prophet.

Never in my life have I witnessed such generosity, compassion and selflessness as I have seen here. I'm not even suprised by it anymore. I expect it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't take it for granted.

As long as we continue to do what we do best, there's nothing but good can come of it.

That's my ten cents, my two cents is free. You'll get my bill.
