| Avast - Count me in!
Well count me in as yet another person that has dropped NAV for Avast. Sad too because I have been using NAV/NU since 1995. NSW 2003 was the last version I bought. NAV 2004 and its activation was the last straw.
Norton has been adding more crap and using more resources and getting more and more invasive and I just could not deal with it anymore. It's tentacles were spreading like a cancer all over my machine and I saw no way to stop it.
Avast has a pro version I can pay for and put on my machine and a free version I can put on all my other machines without more licenses and taking over my machine.
Sorry Norton. I was a very loyal customer and I tried to hang on as long as I could but you never got better. You only got worse. |

By the way, if you still want to use some of the Norton utilities, you can do a custom install of Norton. For example, just install windoc and diskdoc, then send their icons to your desktop, and they will go right to the utility without going through the main GUI.

I spoke to Norton and he said: "I have been very busy lately down here in the sewer. I will try to fix my anti-virus thingy when I get home. Sorry for the inconvenience. Your pal, Norton." - -:) |

| reply to Keizer where were you when I got blasted on this forum for my support of Avast? I used to use it (changed NOT because I didn't like it) and still recommend it to anyone.
But the lambasting I got, nearly drove me away from BBR altogether.

Why would you get blasted for supporting Avast? Was that before or after this current Norton trouble? I could see someone getting blasted for not using an AV at all, but if someone is trying to protect their system, even with a weaker AV, at least they are trying.

Wouldn't it be a great marketing ploy if an AV company, knowing some (maybe a quite a few) home customers buy one copy and install it on all their machines, specifically allowed such in their EULA? We've heard of site-licensing and enterprise-licensing, where the heck is house-licensing for the average geek?
As long as the price was competitive, I'd probably buy that company's software. Er, well, maybe not if it were McAfee. |

I tried Avast! and I found it to be a great AV.. However, it's overall detection is great, but not what I would call outstanding, according to reviews and others I converse with. Still, it's a very good AV!Being in possession of a free copy of McAfee, after rebates and discounts, that's what I'm using on the laptop LOL.. Besides, McAfee's detecion, along with KAV, is really in the 1 or 2 position, IMHO... -- I'm Mad With Power! |

Here's a couple.
F-Prot for Windows--$29.00, 5 home computers allowed. Works out to 6 bucks a machine.
Defender Pro--(KAV Lite rebadge) $9.92 at Wal-Mart. "Unlimited" home computers. |

| reply to Sentinel I was a long time NAV user but I hated how I had to renew my subscription every year. On my laptop I am using AntiVir and on my desktop I'm using Avast. I love Avast's user interface, the low amount of resources it uses and the fact that it's free. It works great and I haven't had any problems yet! |

For one, I'm sorry to hear that you were blasted for using and supporting Avast. I don't recall seeing the posts but for all the negatives you may have received, I'm sure those that were critical do not speak for the majority of users. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

In the Avast support forum, I have read threads where people un-installed Norton, so they could then install Avast. After the install, Avast found a virus that Norton overlooked. Might have been a fluke though, you never know!

| reply to Sentinel Has anyone used/using or trialed/trialing Avast Pro? I ran the trial version, it was only for one day, the GUI seemed a little user unfriendly. A little complicated to set up scheduled scans. Of course it could just be me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the product. I just might give it another try. |

I haven't tried the pro version, but found the free home version a great combo of user friendly screens, and enough left over for the user to configure it to their liking.

Well I am curious as to what this person had to say about Avast. Can you link to a thread or two?

If it was updates then it was Me, and I still believe KAV gives more frequent updates about every 3 hours than any AV.
