| Help for UDDialup
I run UDDialup on two machines, or should I say, I try to. One is my Mother's machine and the other is an older Packard Bell I have here. My mother's machine never dials out like it is supposed to, so we are not getting the benefit out of it we should. It worked when I first set it up but now it doesn't. This machine never has worked. I have to go in once a week and manually dial out. If I leave UDDialup running, it will dial out and stay dialed out, tying up my line for no reason.
Weird stuff.... |

That's what I use and I have no problems with it. -- Team Discovery |

Michael Premium join:2001-05-06 Canada | If no one else gives you an answer on this, I will set mine up to dial out on it's own and report back what happened. I should have an answer for you within a few hours. -- Team Discovery |

| I set up UD Monitor to dial out on it's own and it didn't dial out. As far as I can tell, I had everything set properly, just for some reason it wouldn't dial out.
Now all may not be lost for you. If I understand your situation correctly, UDDialup does not allow for the caching of work units, meaning after the computer finishes a WU it just "sits there" until you come over, send in the result and download another WU.
UD Monitor could really help you out as it does allow for the caching of work units. I maintain a one week supply of WUs. You would still have to go to your mother's place once a week or so and manually connect to empty the cache and replenish it but at least the computer would be processing units during the entire week. With UD Monitor, once a unit is completed, it is stored and the computer begins to work on the next unit in the cache.
I know this wasn't what you wanted to hear and unless someone can weigh in on what I may have configured improperly, I would recommend moving to UD Monitor, simply for it's caching capability.
You can read more about it here:

| It has no way of sensing an internet connection so it would not launch itself when she established her connection. You could very easily teach her how to send the units in and replenish the cache though. Basically four clicks of the mouse executes the whole process. Just tell her not to use that connection for anything else while she is sending the results in as you want to get the maximum number of points for the network setting. -- Team Discovery |

| reply to BadHat I am a dial-up as well and have tried UDDialup in the past as well. Unfortunately it did not work very well for me either.
I agree with Michael that UD monitor is probably the best way to go. You could even cache enough work units for a couple weeks if you wanted. -- TEAM DISCOVERY |

3 edits | You could easily get away with a two week cache as I believe the timeout for unprocessed WUs is 21 days. I will look for the FAQ entry.
Edit: Here is the FAQ entry:
»Team Discovery UD FAQ {Archived} »Timeouts - Is there a time limit set on a Work Unit?
Edit two: The timeout for unprocessed WUs sitting in the cache is 19 days. |
