How is port triggering different from Port Forwarding? I'm interested in it and might give it a try. How would it be configured since I see there are some things different from port forwarding. |

| It's like a conditional port forwarding to any LAN PC. The LAN box that causes a trigger by accessing a server in the "Trigger Port Range" gets forwarded "Incoming Port Range" for awhile. -- Expert Opinions: $5... I Shut Up: $10 |

| I did some very basic testing that goes like this...
When my IRC client connects to an IRC server it uses standard ports near 6667 (6660-6670). That's my trigger...
"Trigger Port Range" 6660-6670
Now while it connects to this server I need to listen (be a server) on port 113 (IDENT)...
"Incoming Port Range" 113-113
What I've done is allow any LAN PC to get forwarded port 113 but only when they connect to an IRC server. I would assume it would instantaneously forward even to a DHCP assigned LAN address but I haven't tested that far. -- Expert Opinions: $5... | So an outgoing port being opened triggers the opening of an incoming port right? What about that application box does anything you want go in there? That is what confused me I thought yu might have to enter a name or something. Oh, how long does the triggered port stay open? I wish these beta features were documented. |

| Yeah, I wish it was documented, too. I think Simon still owes us a promised "Port Triggering" write up (hint hint) .
When I was dinking with this SPI was off... yet SPI would be ideal to determine the connection ceases so the forwarding could be turned off the same time. It looked like a straight timer - duration unknown. Long ago I timed most LinkSys connection forwards (regular old NAT) to be around 6 minutes. Now - what if 2 LAN boxes connects to the same IRC server? Hmmm... which box gets forwarded? Can't be both. The IRCops gets 'em for that anyway (2 connections from same IP). -- Expert Opinions: $5... I Shut Up: $10 |
