Re: how much for speeding ticket?

I got a ticket for speeding up highway 13 in Maryland. For those of you who have never been on highway 13 it's this long and desolate road with practically no cars whatsoever. The ticket was for going 80mph in a 55mph zone.

It was the only speeding ticket I've ever received for which I received points on my license in my entire life.

I later found out that Maryland more of a gigantic speed trap than it is of a state.

Apparently nj assigns points to your license if you get a ticket in almost everywhere.

nj sucks, I pay more for insurance than i do for my car payments. I'm thinking of getting an ny or fl license.

At first I thought everyone on the highway was drunk but then I realized I was driving in Florida

I always remember that when I receive a ticket in Jersey. No points!

Strange how NY makes a pact with two Canadian provinces instead of neighboring states like NJ or CT.

NY did sign the compact with the other 43 states and does trade information with them...its just that NY doesn't record out of state violations to its residents' licences.

If you live in FL (or NJ and CT) and get a ticket in NY, the information will go to your state's DMV and they will add points according to their schedule (4 for this offense as previously noted).

yeah and FL appears to be a bad state for that... perhaps i should get a NY one before i leave...:)

i found the NY DMV site and emailed them my question with complaints about the system. it said that it may take up to 5 days to respond.

OK, what I was trying to say, was it is up to the state you have your DL in, to issue points or not. And as you pointed out NY, does not assign points for out of state tickets.

On a side note, NY may be a good place to have a DL, if you travel a lot across the country, and have a heavy foot

That's not what the NYS DMV states for NY drivers:

"The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles does not record convictions of moving traffic violations by NYS non-commercial licensed drivers in other jurisdictions, except traffic offenses committed in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, in Canada. Therefore, except for traffic convictions in Ontario and Quebec, out-of-state traffic convictions are not added to your New York State "violation point" driving record.

However, your New York State license will be suspended if you fail to answer a ticket for a moving violation in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin. Your license will remain suspended until you answer the ticket. Likewise, drivers from any state, except those from the six states listed above, will have their driver licenses suspended in their own state for failure to answer a moving violation summons in New York State."

Most street cops, will have no idea of fees, They are set by the court, and the Officers job is patrol, not collect. So that is why.

Some cities/states, have the fees printed on the back of tickets, so after awhile the officers know all the fees, but other wise, it is something the officer doesn't need to know.

Back in the 70's the states got together and formed, and signed a compact, stating they would all share driver info. Some states did not want to sign this, I think there is about 5 states that are not apart of this, CA, and MI are 2 of them for sure. Meaning A MI resident, can get pulled over in OH, and OH police can not see the MI driving record.

Points, and fees still apply.

Trust me, I lived in MI, and went to college in OH. I know all about this.

Points are assigned by the state you have you DL in, not where you got the ticket. Where as fees are assigned by the court where you got the ticket.

To find out the cost of your ticket, if not printed on the back, call the court and ask.
