New Motorola 5100, down speed fine, up is horrible

My rental Motorola SB4100 bit the dust.
Comcast tech replaced it with a new SB5100.
Speed test yields 3000+ down (new 5100)
Up test yields 45-90 (new 5100)
Old 4100 produced 3000+/220 on most tests.
I have the standard "Silver" service.
Tweak test is perfect, no retransmits, 100% efficiency, all smily faces everywhere.
RWIN = 64240 (unchanged)
MTU = 1500 (unchanged)
Motorola diagnostic page appear about the same for both the old and new modems.

Cable modem connects to a Linksys 4 port router, thence to my machine and to my wife's machine.

Any suggestions I can try myself or should I request another truck roll ??
Could Comcast techs re-provision or correct the slow up speeds from their end ??

·Comcast

couple of ideas:

1. check the moto signal page again. What is the upstream power level? Is it stable and well below 55 dB? If not, call comcast and ask them to take a look.

2. run a line quality test from dslreports and also a tracert to a remote site. an alternative to running tracert is hypertrace from analogx (it is free).
you can find hypertrace here: »www.analogx.com/contents/downloa···race.htm

if the line quality test shows lots of packet loss, then forward the report to comcast with the IP addresses of the routers that are slowing you down.

good luck

I just installed a new sb5100, from my RCA 235. The RCA got 3500/248.

This stinkin sb5100 gets only 3400/120???

Why is my upload so slow? Is there some sort of firmware or something?

It is NOT a problem with the cable, as my RCA did perfect about 5 minutes ago. Its a problem with the MODEM.

Re: New Motorola 5100, down speed fine, up is horr

Blue I had really same issue when I switched from 3com sharkfin to this junk 5100. You can easily call Comcast and complain........explain to the cust. service rep to make sure the TECH BRINGS OUT A RCA modem (or one of your choice) when he visits.

I also think is modem as I've troubleshot everything else (good signals, no router, etc). My uploads never get over 100!

p.s. my firmware here in w. suburbs is 1.1.1.1 what do you have?

Re: New Motorola 5100, down speed fine, up is horrible

I looked in my sb5100's logs and found the following:

quote:
1970-01-01 00:00:39 3-Critical 0x04E33948 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
1970-01-01 00:00:16 3-Critical 0x0501BD64 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
1970-01-01 00:00:20 3-Critical 0x04E33948 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
1970-01-01 00:00:15 3-Critical 0x0501BD64 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing

Daddad, check the motorola modem logs. Check if you get the errors i get.

I did not get the error indications you got.

However, I DID get this:
"DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response."

I have the 2.3.1.3 also... and I am getting the same issues. How can we approach Comcast about this?

I used to have those issues when they first upgraded the speed in my area to 3300/256. The firmware I was getting used to be 2.3.1.3, I believe. Now, the problem is basically gone! My current firmware is SB5100-2.3.1.6-SCM06-NOSH and I just got 3137/231 on the »nyc.speakeasy.net test. Comcast has to push the new firwmare for the modem in your areas for you to get it.

Keep in mind that although I was having a problem, it was only related to the java-based tests on this site. Regular FTP tests and others showed upload results much closer to the 256k cap.

I have had 4 techs. out the they say my line is great. I too have the Linksys 4-port could it be something with that. this is crazy stuff. I have call comcast around 20 times since August and they refuse to help.

Re: New Motorola 5100, down speed fine, up is horr

I have the very same firmware as you have and I just got:

"2004-02-07 16:48:58 EST: 3076 / 69
Your download speed : 3076800 bps, or 3076 kbps.
A 375.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 69753 bps, or 69 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier "

This is typical of what I have been getting

Hope one of the Comcast techs looks in on this thread and can recommend what we can do about this problem

What firmware is your modem running (Check in Docsis Diag)

I just tried my old 3100, same problems, so I really don't think this is a modem issue (at least with mine)
