The Motherload of Windows Wireless Tools/Links

This is an attempt to try and place as many helpful links for both troubleshooting and tools in one message for Microsoft based PC’s in one place. Very soon a version of this will be created for Unix/Linux as well.

ALL Utilities and tools in this list have been tested and are FREE!

Most have source code if you are interested in How theses tools work, or would like to see how to make one of your own similar utilities or tools.

If you have and suggestions on helpful troubleshooting links or FREE utilities and tools please first test them and add them to this thread.

NOTE: Prior to downloading, please make sure that ALL Microsoft software is current with ALL updates.

If you are on XP Home or Professional versions of an OS additionally please go to this thread and manually install this additional Windows update:

»Wireless Update Rollup Package for Windows XP

TROUBLESHOOTING

ALWAYS make sure you read the user manual FIRST and you may be surprised on what the manufacture of your Wireless equipment has in their support section of their website.

This may sound crazy but if you can’t find information at your manufactures web site, go to Linksys.com or other manufactures web sites and check their support area, they may have GENERAL suggestions for example on interfacing to a specific DSL or cable company or just GOOD troubleshooting techniques in general.

LITTLE KNOWN ABOUT TOOLS

Managing a Wireless Network can be complicated because equipment is located everywhere and when trying to manage a Wireless Network from one PC, well soon you run out of Desktop area as well.

Here are 2 FREE tools which can really help solve both of these problems, one is from Microsoft the other was designed by ATT Bell Labs England.

VIRTUAL DESKTOP MANAGER

A Microsoft PowerToy that allows your PC to have 4 desktops at once and can switch to any of them or look at all 4 of them at one time and easily. This allows you to run some of the utilities and tools included here on their own desktop out of the way, but easily switched back to when needed. This tool can be downloaded directly from here:

»download.microsoft.com/download/···etup.exe

The page for ALL XP PowerToys is located here:

REALVNC ( Source Code Available at Site )

WINPCAP ( Source Code Available At Site )

This is a Library ( software that can be shared by many programs ) that is needed for some very good tools and it is VERY important that this is installed and the proper version is installed for some of the other tools listed here.

You should check to see if you may have an OLDER version of this by looking in your ADD/REMOVE hardware section of the control panel. Please make sure if you have an OLDER version, remove it, prior to installing this version.

Here is the version to download DO NOT DOWLOAD the Beta Version you want this version 3.0, if you do download the Beta Version by mistake use ADD/REMOVE program to remove it an download this:

»winpcap.polito.it/install/bin/Wi···_3_0.exe

The Main Site is located here and includes many links as well as documentation and source code:

»winpcap.polito.it/default.htm

DIAL-UP WIRELESS NETWORKING

Some of us have Wireless Networks or need to install wireless networks that do NOT have the ability to interface to DSL or Cable. Yes, even using AOL Dial-up, it is possible to actually use one phone line for many computers on a Wireless Network.

I have installations where as many a 6 computers share one 56Kb dial-up line, and it works well, as long as two people are not doing LONG downloads at the same time.

HOW TO DO IT?

First, you need a PROXY, it does not require that the computer that has the modem be directly connected to your Router/AP. The only requirement is that the computer that is directly connected to the Internet via a modem is running a PROXY.

Download this FREE PROXY, and install it on the computer which has the modem and will be dialing to get on the internet from here:

Documentation for the proxy can be found here:

The main Networking area for this site which has many more FREE tools is located here:

Install the PROXY on the computer that will be dialing out to the Internet

Run the proxy program, it will inform you that it is running in open mode, don’t worry ( for now ) just click ok.

Go to each computer on your Wireless Network
( Except the one used for dialing up the Internet connection ) and open a browser window, click on tools, select Internet Options, then click on the connections tab.

Click on the LAN SETTINGS button, then check the USE PROXY server box, make sure that the Bypass Proxy server box is NOT checked.

Click on the ADVANCED button.

Place the IP address of the computer that will be dialing in the following boxes and use these port numbers:

HTTP 192.168.1.100 6588
Secure 192.168.1.100 6588
FTP 192.168.1.100 21
GOPHER BLANK BLANK
SOCKS 192.168.1.100 1080

NOTE: 192.168.1.100 is ONLY an example IP address use YOUR IP address of the computer that will connect to the Internet via the dial-up modem.

Make sure that the USE the same proxy server box is NOT checked, and then click OK.

Setting up YAHOO MESSENGER on the computers WITHOUT a modem:
Start messenger on the computers not connected to the Internet via the modem and click on LOGIN, select preferences and choose connection.

Make sure that the USE PROXIES is selected.

Check the Enable HTTP Proxy box

In the HTTP proxy server name field enter the IP address of the computer that is connected to the Internet via the dial-up modem, example:

192.168.1.100 6588

Check the Enable SOCKS Proxy box, also make sure that Ver 4 is selected and that the Authentication box is NOT checked.

In the HTTP proxy server name field enter the IP address of the computer that is connected to the Internet via the dial-up modem, example:

192.168.1.100 1080

NOTE: again the IP address of 192.168.1.100 is an EXAMPLE, use the IP address of the computer that will be connected to the Internet via its dial-up modem.

AIM

Click on My Aim, Select edit options, select edit preferences, Click on Sign on/Sign off, then click on the Connection button.

Check the Connect using proxy box

Select Socks 5

Enter the IP address of the computer that will be dialing the Internet in the Host field:

192.168.1.100

Enter 1080 in the port field

Again, 192.168.1.100 is ONLY an example, enter the IP address of the computer that will be dialing up the Internet on your network.

PROS/CONS

FTP will not be able to be used on ANY of the computers except the one directly connected to the Internet via it’s modem, unless you install an FTP client.

CAM’s will NOT be able to be used on Yahoo messenger or AIM that are not connected to the computer that is the one dialed into the Internet via its modem. Additionally, you will NOT be able to view CAMS on Yahoo messenger or AIM on the computers NOT connected via a modem.

You may have other software, such as ICQ, or MSN that will need similar changes to use a proxy, or Adware removal software.

The benefits are even using AOL dial-up each computer will be able to use messengers, access the internet via one phone line.

Please NOTE, that there are MANY more links, tools, utilities that can be found for Troubleshooting as well as management of Wireless Networks.

These are just a start and I hope others will contribute to this thread so that MAYBE it can be a THREAD that can turn out to help ALL levels of Wireless Networks users, Installers, as well as programmers that would like to learn how to develop tools and utilities.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Thanks

Thanks for the information...I am sure it will be of help to a lot of folks...

One thing I would change however is the VNC link. Look at UltraVNC versus the RealVNC. The reason I say this is because UltraVNC has an encryption plug-in available...which many folks may find useful and desireable...

Yes, the version seems like it is good, however the down side is that it is ONLY Win32 based:

QUOTE

* What is VNC, what is Ultr@VNC ?

VNC is a famous, cross-plateformes and Free (GPL) software allowing to remotely control your computer(s) over any TCP/IP connection as if you were in front of it. It is very usefull for network administration, remote troubleshooting, eLearning and so on. The original distribution is available here.

Ultr@VNC is an enhanced VNC distribution, for Win32 plateforms only (for now). It's based on RealVNC, features TightVNC smart cursor handling and encoding, almost all the special functionnalities that can be found in eSVNC and Vdacc-VNC, and a LOT more.) End of Quote

Since many people have Mixed OS systems on their Wireless Networks such as 95/98/ME as well as Linux/Unix the original link would be much better at this time.

An aspect of Windows NT/2000/XP network security that's often overlooked is file shares. A common security flaw occurs when users define file shares with lax security, allowing unauthorized users to see sensitive files. There are no no built-in tools to list shares viewable on a network and their security settings, but ShareEnum fills the void and allows you to lock down file shares in your network.

When you run ShareEnum it uses NetBIOS enumeration to scan all the computers within the domains accessible to it, showing file and print shares and their security settings. Because only a domain adminstrator has the ability to view all network resources, ShareEnum is most effective when you run it from a domain adminstrator account.

ShareEnum works on Windows NT/2000/XP.

This utility has helped me find WRITE access shares on many a Wireless Network. Here is the direct download link:

Source and Documentation can be found here:

Manage your XP/NT/2000 systems REMOTELY

PsExec - execute processes remotely
PsFile - shows files opened remotely
PsGetSid - display the SID of a computer or a user
PsKill - kill processes by name or process ID
PsInfo - list information about a system
PsList - list detailed information about processes

All of the utilities in the PsTools suite work on Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The PsTools download package includes an HTML help file with complete usage information for all the tools.

Installation

None of the tools requires any special installation. You don't even need to install any client software on the remote computers at which you target them. Run them by typing their name and any command-line options you want. To show complete usage information, specify the "-?" command-line option.

Yes, thanks for the kind words. It has taken me weeks of searching and testing as well to make sure that ALL of the listed utilities were tested and are stable.

Most people do not know that there are Microsoft Supported FIXS between Service packs for XP in one place.

Here is a Links to a thread in this forum that shows how you can find the supported Service Packs for your Microsoft Software, and a link to supported fixes for XP since SP1 was releases, AKA known as POST SP1 fixes.

There is a Good chance that there are additional fixes you may want there.

Here is the link to the thread

(Please NOTE Someone posted a link to the BETA SP2, I would suggest NOT to download/Install it)
