|  Comcast vs AOL DSL
I have had Comcast HSI since the @ Home days and I have never been happier. I am even now more happy that I can now download at beyond 3.2 Mbps. I know a few AOL DSL users who refuse to switch and always trash Comcast but I know for a fact AOL DSL is $50/month as opposed to $42/month and isn't nearly as fast cause it runs on DSL. Some even have Comcast and still use AOL ($14.95 Service) because they think the content is cool and refuse to change there email address. AOL is also losing customers left and right and Comcast is still the nation's largest broadband provider. So if you had a choice between AOL DSL and Comcast HSI, these being your own choices, what would you chose and why?

Actually your forgetting about Time Warner Cable.
Well if your in a AOL/Verizon Territory, that's a bad move, due to their contract you can only get 768/128 speeds, but if you go directly with Verizon DSL, you get 1.5Mbps/128 speeds, I would go with Comcast.

The thing about getting Earthlink or AOL or whatever is because, since they don't own the wires, if something goes wrong thats City wide ::storm, ect:: then ur gonna be waiting in line. Often Cable and phone companies will fix their own customers up first and formost and get to you some other time. Its the hard truth but simple logic really. |

I look at it like this: why even bother with AOL when all they do is take the price that the ISP in your area, such as Comcast, charges and tack on additional $15 for services that they "offer" but you could get for free elsewhere.
Also, AOL's software is the epitome of bad programming. Every glitch, error and bug that could be included in a program has been thrown in there. And to top it all off, they build a system where any AOL technician can view your files? It's part of their "help" system. Yeah, no thanks. I'll help myself.
AOL = Garbage. At least with Comcast you can choose to not install their crappy software and the connection will still work. Comcast wins hands down. |

I do agree that AOL does suck big time, but I have to disagree with you about using their software, on AOL DSL, you don't have to use their software, you can login via PPPoE and just surf with IE.

People who are on AOL DSL probably want AOL's premium content. You can bash it all you want, but the fact remains that a lot of people ... and I mean, a LOT of people, do enjoy the AOL experience and ease of use.
The comparable package would be Comcast HSI + AOL BYOA, which costs more. The speeds are better, but for a good number of the people checking their email and surfing the web, they may not notice or care about 768kbps vs 3000kbps. That makes AOL DSL is a better deal for them.
Now that you can log in via PPPoE, I'm far more inclined to recommend that service to AOL fans. Their proprietary connection stuff was absolutely dreadful. Of course, now I think Verizon and SBC + BYOA are currently cheaper than standalone AOL DSL, so that's probably a better route anyhow.

| i use to have aol dsl up until about 6 months ago. I now have comcast hsi. I think comcast is a lot better. With aol dsl i would lose sync for days at a time. For some reason it would be basically every sunday. I havent had that problem with comcast. I still use aol. Im on the byoa plan which for me is $9.95 a month since i have been with aol for about 11 years they cut me a deal instead of $14.95. The price is about the same since aol was $55 a month. Now i get comcast for $42.95 and aol for $9.95. I am much happier with comcast. Oh yeah just to tell you aol is getting much better with their software. I think 9.0 might be the best one yet. Well actually i think 1.0 was the best cause there was nothing on there for it to crash. Oh yeah one more thing you can sign on to aol dsl through pppoe so you dont have to use their software. |

To put it simple, Id rather have my CHSI. I've only had 3 total outages since I had cable modem service and they normally only lasted 30mins, the longest outage was 1 hour and that was due to some upgrades(the rest where weather related) and I've had it sicne late 1999 way before Comcast took over @home. I cant rate tech support as I've never had to call them. Pings stay below 40ms even during peak. I cant complain.

AOL is in no way near superior to Comcast. People only cling to their beloved AOL because they don't know enough about it to know what a rip-off it truly is. I chose comcast all the way, in part because it isn't full of little "features" that hold your hand every time you try to do anything. AOL is plain annoying. The fact that it is DSL (and therefore nowhere near as fast as cable) is also a turn-off.
The bottom line is that AOL is on it's way out. |

well i duno about the dsl or if it would happen if AOL is your ISP but i use the BYOA for broadband and AOL hurts my connection when i have the AOL browser open especially the UL and if u want the aol content if you get aol byoa and comcast it is about the same [price as the aol dsl |

The selection of the supplier is entirely dependent on which provider is able to provide the best/cost performance at a given address. This varies in my area on a house to house basis. (Largely due to poor connectors installed by mediaone years ago, which will never be replaced, no matter how many service calls.) |
