No Audio in Win98

I working on a relatives PC that had the Mydoom virus. Dell 4100 (P3 with win98se). I used norton to remove all virus, adaware to remove spyware (comet, gator, etc). Video was stuck at VGA only(16 color, 640x480) so I downloaded and installed ATI rage 128 16mb drvr. I now can control video res and machine seems very stable. Cursor was also not present due to a mouse conflict. I deleted and reinstalled mouse and that now works properly. PC had 18 GB drive with only 1 gig free. I found many tmp files (1000's; about 5 gB) in the windows temp directory that I deleted to make more space on the drive

However, sound is not working. In control panel system drvrs seem OK (no conflicts!). However in the "multimedia" section of control panel it indicates that sound drvrs are loaded by "not enabled". There is also no "volume control" in accessories. I tried reinstalling the audio drvrs and they say they installed OK, several times. Do I need to put something in the autoexec.bat and/or config.sys? If so what?

Sound card is creative labs sound blaster PCI 64V.

Any help would be great!

TIA

HSS

Go to the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and choose the middle tab, Windows Setup. You can add the volume control from in there but you may need the w98 cd. Can you make any adjustments from there?

I don't think that will enable my sound card. When I get home from work I will check my interrupts to see if the sound card is shared or dedicated. Maybe that will give me a clue

I know it won't enable your sound card, but it will definitely give you more control over how to set things and some program could have muted it, and it will tell you in there most likely!

I misquoted the message in the multimedia portion of control panel. Under AUDIO DEVICES it says "driver is enabled but inactive due to unknown problem". Also looked at IRQ's SB card is using IRQ 9 which is shared with "intel 82801 BA/BAM SMBus controller", and ACPI holder and SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus. Four devices are sharing IRQ 9. not sue if this a problem. could not reassign IRQ to 5 which is listed as free. Moved SB PCI card to 2 other slots, IRQ configured by PnP was now 11. This did not affect results. Still looking for ideas if anyone has any.

Go to Start/settings/control panel/system and remove it. Reboot your computer and wait for it to be detected, Reinstall the drivers and then see if it works.

I tried removing sb card from control panel system devices. Windows re-detected the SB card and installed the drivers. Still had the same problem.

Thanks anyway

Have you considered that the card itself is bad?

Did you install the SB drivers? Do you have Creative listed on the Start/Programs/Creative?.
Go to the Control panel/sounds and Multimedia. Can you play a sound there?
You have to see this set speaker icon there. If you can't then your drivers aren't installed.

Cant play any sound..Drvr not working properly. I gave pc back to realaitves who need the machine for some business apps. The plan is get another sound card and reinstall. Hopefully less troubles with a newer one. Perhaps win98 is somewhat corrupt. If so I may need to reinstall but that is too much work for me at this time.

Thanks again
