People who are on AOL DSL probably want AOL's premium content. You can bash it all you want, but the fact remains that a lot of people ... and I mean, a LOT of people, do enjoy the AOL experience and ease of use.
The comparable package would be Comcast HSI + AOL BYOA, which costs more. The speeds are better, but for a good number of the people checking their email and surfing the web, they may not notice or care about 768kbps vs 3000kbps. That makes AOL DSL is a better deal for them.
Now that you can log in via PPPoE, I'm far more inclined to recommend that service to AOL fans. Their proprietary connection stuff was absolutely dreadful. Of course, now I think Verizon and SBC + BYOA are currently cheaper than standalone AOL DSL, so that's probably a better route anyhow.
