I moved a Qwest line over to Vonage and have also had lots of trouble faxing. Actually, great trouble sending and lesser receiving. After no responses to email and faxes to customer service, I finally called and got a support rep who was very helpful. After several days of troubleshooting, and running out of possible fixes, he asked if I was dialing *99 before each fax. He said that since I have a "voice" line and not a "fax" line from Vonage, you need to dial the *99 prefix then 1 area code, etc. to send a fax. Seems that if you subscribe to their second "fax" line, you don't need to do this. Now, instead of 1/10 faxes going through, its more like 9/10. Before the *99 revelation, the rep tweaked the IP packet size on my Moto ATA (decreased it) and suggested that I configure the fax to transmit at a max rate of 9600 baud (the later didn't seem to help any).

Guys there is only one way to fax over ip that is worth anything. E-FAX/J2.

For $10 a month you g3et an e-fax phone number that goes straight to your e-mail.

For $15.00 You get a j2 number that acts for both fax and voice mail. Both come to your e-mail.

Supporting a fax machine is a pain, but having an e-fax number has cut down on that pain greatly. I swear by it.

Really. I have a $50 Sharp fax machine I bought from HSN like 3 years ago and it has always worked like a charm with Vonage.
