Re: [COMCAST] Annoying call from COMCAST

The DCT2000/5000s have had a timer function in most markets for about 2 years now. It was one of the firmware upgrades awhile ago. That will change the channel in the cable box. Note that you will still have to set your VCR to record the normal cable output channel at the appropriate time.

It's not that I minded them checking on the service. It was just the intrusive quality of the person who called.

I understand that they check on boxes and were seeing "a problem". However, I did tell her my box was not connected, and I hadn't gotten around to connecting it. I was just suprised by her saying that I should connect it right now.

I was being sarcastic by the Cable Gestappo, by the way. But it was odd that I got a call at 9pm about my cable box.

On a side note. The reason the cable box was not hooked up was as follows. I like to record multiple shows on diff. channels at diff. times. With the cable hooked directly to the VCR, this is possible. Via the box, it is not possible, as the VCR always needs to be on channel 3. That is, the channel is controlled by the box.

As I decided to keep some digital functionality, I have yet to decide which TV to use the box on. One VCR, two TVs bedroom and living room. If I set up the box in the living room I can use the digital functions there, but not record diff channels(at least not by programming the VCR) That's why the box is not connected yet.

Maybe someone knows a solution to this. A splitter arangement of some sort? How do you record diff digital channels in the same day?

Consider it practice in case you ever get VOIP service from Comcast. It's going to be the same thing, only instead of getting a phone call, a truck is going to show up at your door to make sure everything is ok.

Carrier grade quality they want to become.

Well, if they continue being nonresponsive the boxes will be deactivated until a tech can see what the problem is.

A nonresponsive box can indicate wiring problems in the house. It also can indicate possible cable theft. This problem is especially more of a problem as upstreaming becomes more and more important for dats and VOD services.

What gives though, are they worried about people tweaking their boxes???
Yes they are worried because the boxes are expensive and are hard to keep track of. Just search ebay and you will see why.

But why would you not use the box if you are paying for it? If they are an annoying company, seems like you could get better service from another (sat) provider.

No, it's not the "Cable Gestappo" - it's Comcast's way of checking on non-responsive converters. If there's a potential problem with your service and the company notices it and tries to fix it, why would you be upset about that?

If a tech was driving by your home and saw your drop laying on the ground, would you have a problem with him coming to your door and alerting you to the problem, then attempting to fix it? That's pretty much what this call was; a pre-emptive strike against a possible cable problem.

How many other companies would call you out of the blue and report a problem with their equipment, then offer to come fix it for free?

Shame on them.

The bastards.

Let's try to keep a little perspective here.

Recently I made some changes to my cable service. I was about to turn in both my boxes when I decided it might be good to keep some of the digital services. I like the menu and some PPV options.

I kept one of the boxes to use on one TV. Well, I havn't gotten around to reconnecting it and last night I get this annoying call from Comcast.

Basically..." We are having problems communicating with your cable box...etc. etc. etc. Seem to have problems. We are going to have to send someone to your house (What is this, the Cable Gestappo???)" She goes on for a while until I say "Well, it's probably because my digital box IS NOT CONNECTED NOW"

Then..."We'll you need to connect it right away, or you will continue to get calls from us like this" "Your box might stop working, etc."

This call was at 9pm, kind of annoying and harrasing in nature. I understand that the cable boxes are two-way and that they do some configuration on their end. What gives though, are they worried about people tweaking their boxes??? It really was an annoying phone call from an annoying company.
