BabarPremium join:2001-05-09 Washington | Dell Inspiron Synaptics - Scroll Wheel Problem Got a new Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop - nice!
Have a small problem with the "Synaptics" control panel. That's the applet that controls the pointing device properties. It recognizes my Logitech USB optical wheel mouse nicely, and lets me set the scroll wheel to 4 lines at a time. However, it doesn't remember the setting - I have to re-enter it every session.
I'd rather not install the bloated 'mouseware' software from Logitech. I've tried setting the scroll wheel to 4 lines under mouse properties,, and with other tweak programs - it just doesn't want to remember the setting.
Any ideas? -- "Geez, I'm goin' crazy out there at the lake." |

Sweet WitchBe the flame, not the moth.Premium,MVM join:2003-07-15 Gallifrey | Why don't you want to install the proper drivers? I have a Logitech mouse with software, there's no 'bloat' and it works much better than with the native drivers. -- I'm a girl by the way . |

 | DO NOT install the Logitech drivers on any laptop. All laptops, of course, use whatever pointing device and driver they have built in. If you install the Logitech stuff, the touchpad probably won't function.

BabarPremium join:2001-05-09 Washington | I was slightly concerned about compatibility between the native driver and the Mouseware, as well. I like the way the Synaptics applet seamlessly incorporates the external mouse into it's control panel, and, as a general rule, don't like to install unnecessary software (I've never used Mouseware before with my Logitech mice.)
Now, if I could just get it to remember that one little setting!
aatucker - nice to hear from you again... You helped me out with a hard drive issue a long time ago. -- "Geez, I'm goin' crazy out there at the lake." |

 | Babar,
If you haven't already, check the Dell Inspiron Forums. Also check to see if possibly a newer driver version is available. The Dell forums are one of the few places that might rival the number of good posts you see here. Of course their number of bad posts is atrocious:).

GPorterIt Always Works Better When It's On join:2001-03-21 San Antonio, TX | reply to Babar I had Mouseware installed on my Inspiron 8200, and I didn't have any problems between the pad and the mouse. I think the thing is to select (I can't remember where-BIOS, I think) to ignore the pad if an external mouse is connected. -- Glenn-Remembering 9-11-01 "Let's Roll!" |

BabarPremium join:2001-05-09 Washington | reply to Babar Directed to the fix at the Synaptics website from the Dell forums. It was a driver issue, with a simple registry edit to get it straightened out. For anyone interested, it's:
HKLM\Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh AllowWheelSettings = REG_DWORD 1
