I currently have dish network with a dish 500. I am adding a single satellite location (120) to my system with a SW21. Will a direct TV dish pick up a dish network satellite or do I have to get a Dish 300? |

| reply to LessWire Sorry, bud. Although the satellite dishes themselves can be used for each other, you STILL need a DTV receiver if you want DTV programming. Besides, the satellites are in different positions up in orbit. In other words, if you want both services to get the best of both worlds, then you unfortunately have to have multiple dishes to hit each of the orbital slots. Your best bet is a DISH 500 or even the SuperDISH, which will at least pich up programming off of the 110, 119, and now even the 105 (or 121) orbital slots - better than DirecTV. |

Techo evil is correct. You'd have to get the proper LNB for the correct system. The physical dishes are interchangeable. You will need to take in account that different dishes have different offsets for the LNBs. Dish 500's "look" actually at 114.5 degrees, exactly half way between 110 and 119. Dish 300's and single LNB DirecTV dishes always look straight at the satellite. I'd have to do a little bit of research on the Phase II/III dishes from DirecTV.
However, back to LessWire's original question...what are you trying to do? If you already have a Dish 500, you are picking up 110 and 119 already. When you said 120, I believe jmdomini was incorrect in saying you meant 119. I think you are looking to add a dish to pickup your locals on 121.
The 121 satellite is a different type of satellite and LNB. It requires a larger dish and therefor a Dish 300/500 will not work as well as any Dish DirecTV uses. You have 2 choices really. Either a SuperDish upgrade (scarce supply in some places) or finding an old primestar dish. It has the correct size and LNB to pick up the signal.
If you go with the primestar dish, do a search for "poor man's superdish" on google. There are a few things you will have to watch out for. PM me if you need to go this route. Dish also will not support you if you go this route.
A SW21 also probably isn't what you are going to need. Depending on what route you take, you would have to switch over to a DP-34 (included w/ the SuperDish upgrade) or a SW-64 (if you go the primestar route) |
