Re: No DSL

The distance from CO is measured along your line. You can be across the street from CO but your line can go around four blocks and can be 10000 ft accordingly. If PacBell rerouted your voice line, the distance will "magically" increase or decrease. The reason to reroute may be to release shorter line for smb. else.

The "previous" measures were along the conditioned Northpoint line, not along your voice phone line. Northpoint used to pay for made this line short enough and good enough to give you high speed. Now that NP is dead, and your lines are virtually free (although tey are still connected to your modems and former NP DSLAMS, and still synched).

PacPell definitely doesn't know about these lines and most likely doesn't intend to use these lines for residentional-level ADSL.
Telcos used to do "hot switch" of these lines to other DSLAMs - at least some of ILECs did so for MegaPath and DSLi. It seems that they don't do it more, or ask much more money for that switch - that's why most of ISP can't provide te service using former NP line.

If your line is still synched, you can try to find ISP who provides real SDSL, not voice-shared service, and ask them to organize the "hot switch". It seems to be possible, but be prepared: it's going to be far out of residential-price level.

Sorry, no one want to provide SDSL service for $49 and than go chapter 11 like NP did...

I feel for you as I am in the same boat( see my post 2 down from yours) Pac Bell says im at 20,000 ft. but i had SDSL as well and i was less than a year ago according to Pac Bell 14,750 ft. from the CO. They wont explain why, no one there will answer this question I asked for an explanation none was given. I can do nothing, no cable for me either Dish is an option albeit expensive one. Pac Bell leaves me no choice but to file complaints with everyone I can, from the BBB to local papers, to the PUC. They have operated unfairly and been fined for this recently. They have done nothing on my Telocity account it still sitting there waiting for Pac Bell to get back to them. Good Luck

Since this march my DSL is out.
Yes, I used to have Northpoint DSL, just like everybody else, my line is dead (but the funniest thing is i still get a green light from my dsl model??!!) In the good old days, I used to have a SDSL 384, and I could sware the last time I check my CO, I was only 12000 feet away. However, After the down check this site, and call mamy companies, my distence suddently jump to 16000 feet. This results me from getting any other DSL then IDSL, which would be twice I have paid and one third of the speed I used to get. I just don't get it why...
also, I have learn that PacBell might install a remote terminal near my location, and if that ever happened, I might just be abel to get the DSL. But, when will that happen? no one knows, not even customer rep from pacbell.
other option then DSL? nop, no cable modem service, nor sprint service, and because I am liveing in a apartment complex, no dish.... that leaves a fully configured home network laying..
amy one had suggestion? or any idea why the distence suddently jump?? Please help... I am dieing............
