After running Windows XP update, I get a message that there is a driver to be installed: 'Install Processor Software Update.' The message adds 'This is an update that was released on January 27, 2002.' The file downloads, but
installation repeatedly fails. I would very much appreciate some advice.

Don't try to install it, it is over two years old. Your existing driver is probably newer than that.
