Re: [wireless] WRT54G and WPA problems!

I have the exact same WPA prolem mentioned by Taiguy. I would estimate it to be closer to 1-2 min before my link going south. Disable/Reenable the NIC and all is well until I reboot.

It's quite frustrating. I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to whether this happens with other brand products or not.

Of course Linksys tech support is no help at all.

Had the same problems. Disabled the wireless zero in hopes that the Linksys monitor would kick in...no such luck. Couldn't connect at all. Finally had enough and downloaded the Odyssey (3rd client software) by Funk...turned off wireless zero permanently.

Haven't had any disconnect problems. I guess until the problem is resovled between wireless zero and WPA, this will work.

Does anyone have any idea how I can lower the signal on my WRT54G (linksys router)? I've read on the forum about people decreasing their signal so that it doesn't "leave the house". Can't figure out where to find the proper setting to tweak.

Thanks

Look for post about hacked firmware. With that you can increase or decrease the signal strength.

OKay, nobody answered my question. I think I may have it narrowed down to a problem with multiple user accounts in WindowsXP (or fast user switching) If you are having the disconnect issue where after a few minutes you can't reach your network or the internet even though the Windows Wireless Zero Config Utility says you're still connected - please post if you are using multiple user accounts where you boot and have to log-in to the computer before going to your desktop.

dtaylor, are you using Odyssey with WindowsXP or another OS? To my knowledge I wasn't aware that Odyssey would work with WindowsXP.

I do have multiple accounts set up and have to log into my administrator account with a password. The other users have the same disconnect problem, they do not have to log in with passwords. This occurs whether they do the initial boot up, or if I'm still logged on.

yes, I'm using XP. Just so you know exactly what I'm using, here is the link......

I've downloaded the demo and the little black ship shows up next to the time on my screen. I've disabled the wireless zero.

I really thought that it was strange that I could never manage to get the linksys lan monitor to work, or even appear. Just finally got tired of the nonsense and saw a post that mentioned odyssey.

Thought that it couldn't hurt, and might help. Of course I haven't paid for the full version yet, so we'll see how this 30 days goes.

Wireless Guru asked about disconnects and multiple user accounts.

I have the exact problem discussed, namely right after boot and login, I have a good connection that lasts from 1 to 5 mins. Then the connection seems to die, even though all other indications seem to show the connection is just fine. I've been disabling/enabling the connection to get it back. From then on, it seems to work just fine for many hours.

I'm using WinXP Pro on a Dell laptop with a TrueMobile 1300 NIC and WAP/PSK security. WRT54G AP.

I've installed the latest MS Wireless roll-up patches, and I think my NIC driver/firmware is up to date.

It would be great if we could track this down. Perhaps monitoring the traffic with a second host (kismet/netstumbler).

I have posted messages in the MS wireless networking newsgroup on this issue. I found a work-around by making the Key Renewal period very short (the lost connection after boot-up would renew itself after the next key renewal period).

I can now do better than that workaround. Someone (thanks Alex) sent me a registry fix which seems to resolve the issue (he calls it a workaround, I think it's a fix):

>> This will solve your WiFi problem! although this
>> should be considered a workaround,
>> rather than a fix. With AuthMode set to 2 it means
>> Machine authentication only.
>> Whenever a user logs in, it has no effect on the
>> connection. 802.1X authentication is
>> performed using machine credentials only.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EAPOL\Parameters\General\Global]
"AuthMode"=dword:00000002

Peter

When I first installed the updated driver package for the WPC54G notebook adapter the installation went awry and it installed the Odyssey client as well (Free from Linksys but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be an XP compatible version). I ended up doing a system restore to get it undone. I will try the Odyssey client if the registry tweak mentioned in the other post doesn't work.

By the way, if anyone is interested, if you apply '0' to the Routers Group renewal Key, this is saying that every 24 hours, the encryption will change.

That's good to know - I was enetering "86400" at one point. Where did you find this info? I've searched everywhere for more specifics on "Group Key Renewal Interval", and I couldn't find any more info that says exactly what it does and why. I specifically want to know if I'm going to get a temporary disconnection when this renewal occurs.

Hello Wireless Guru,
Well, I was having a discussion with a senior tech person at Linksys, regarding the GRK etc. I asked, that if I used '0', is the encryption changing continously, since using '1' is every second. H said no, '0'is changing the encryption every 24 hrs. Right now, my GRK on my WRT54G is set to 600 sec. Using WPA, my setup is working very well, no connection drops, and when rebooting, I can get right back to the Net.

Disable WPA then uncheck 802.1x then re-enable WPA.

How would I go about doing this?

Thanks for the help guys.

I had the WPA initial connection problems. I found that I had network connectivity for about 1 minute, then off for another minute, then back on for another minute, then down again for about 9 minutes. After that, the connection would return and remain. A constant ping to the router was a good way to watch the connectivity drop and come back. I added the registry workaround and it seems to work. Thanks.

I tried the RegFix and still, doesn't work. WEP works, but not WPA.
