Re: 6208 DVR

Kcharg,

I added a Mot 5100 to my analog cable in december and had additional charges for $6.45 for "advanced services converter". This months bill has 2 charges, one for the H-Def box and an additional $4.80 for a digital services converter ! I talked to comcast support and the lady kept insisting the audit department added this charge even though i have no digital cable & have never had. Any idea what this charge is for ?

Thanks
Nivas

Just got off the phone with comcast, and according to the service rep, the 6208 is suppose to be ready for install on Feb. 28. She also impled that those who already subscribe to HD should be receiving a call to see if they want to up grade. I called about 3 weeks ago and had them place me on the list for the upgrade and she confirmed that I would receive a call to set up an appointment sometime next week between the 23rd and the 28th. So hopefully come the 1st of the month it goodbye vcr recording and hello one touch DVR recording in HD when availeable.

I hope I am not too crude about this but I am not a CSR. I am an outside tech. I don't a thing about the whole billing system.

This is exactly what they told us at our company wide meeting this past Tuesday and Wednesday. You should most likely get a call this next week. You'll get hooked on the 6208. It's a great box, I'm just waiting on more features on the box to become active.

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

Kcharg,
I'm not sure if this is a dumb question but....

Why not have all of the features of the box enabled upon release??

Why wait to enable the USB.. the Ethernet.. the DVI
Why cant they just release the box with everything working rather than teasing us by showing features that we can't use and getting us upset until they do??

PD

That's a damn good question. It's all on Motorola actually. Comcast can only implement so much. As soon as Motorola gave us the capabilities to enable to DVI we did. It's just a matter of time before the Ethernet and USB ports are enabled.

Kcharg:

I assume the 6208 uses a different guide than the 5100? If so, do you think its better? Faster? Slower?

How many days are in the guide's listings?

Does the 6208 let you record all episodes of a particular show through a single setting?

Will they let us do a self-install of the 6208 or is that another service call & charge?

Thanks for all the help over this lengthy thread.

Is there an advantage to using DVI over the component?

Component is analog. DVI (actually DVI-D) is digital. Your monitor will actually convert the analog to digital so there is a source of error.

So using component: Digital->Analog->Digital

DVI-D: Digital->Digital

On my Philips plasma, I really can't see the difference. I will use the DVI so I can use component out of my DVD player.

Re: 6208 DVR

Hmmm... I got a different story from the CSR I just spoke with. I was told I could place an order on the 23rd for the box swap, what she did not know was whether I could self-install (replacing a 5100) or would need to have an appointment.

Come to think of it what stew said is what I was told. They would be making calls to HD subscribers to set up appointments for installs starting the 23rd. I would suggest making life easier on one's self by calling and making the appointment yourself and not taking a chance of missing the one random call they will make to you as an HD subscriber.

I should get paid by the question.

1. The guide is different. Blue, Purple or Black.
2. Approx. 4 days
3. Yes and no. I can set a Mon-Fri show to record without having the guide info yet.
4. I don't honestly know, probably a truck roll.
5. Your welcome.

Not trying to be sarcastic.

I think we should all just wait until the 23rd is here to start calling. There are so many different stories going around and not only that my company can and will change their minds in a minutes notice. A little patience.

We were told at our company meeting this past week that InHD1 & 2 are amongst three upcoming channels, PBS being the other one. I don't know a time line though. I would venture off and say probably by April.

DVI definitely works on my machine.

However, my Philips plasma has problems with the 4:3 channels. The 16:9 channels looks great, but I see an annoying line at the top of most of the 4:3 channels.

Granted, my plasma dvi-d is really supposed to be a computer input, so I can't expect it to work for HDTV. I finally had to go back to component and use S-Video for my DVD player.

Re: 6208 DVR

Darn I thought Discovery was going to be next, and not PBS. I also thought INHD1 & 2 was going to be in February Oh well, I guess I can wait. Thanks for the info.

I think I speak for most people when I say that we would all rather have Discovery HD than PBS HD. We'll just have to wait and see. I think the main focus now though is going to be getting VOD (Video-on-Demand)working in Dallas now. We have allot of work to do before this happens, but it would be nice to see Comcast continue to add some quality HD channels while we're waiting on this VOD.
