All these consumer grade manufactures are faced with increasingly short product life cycles and feel pressure to push stuff out the door as quickly as possible- regardless of the state of the firmware/user interface. The buyers, in effect, become beta-testers. In their partial defence, Netgear has had similar issues with this chipset (Atheros) too, so it might be bigger than just a Dlink issue.
I'm all for open source, the Linksys Wrt54G has become a enterprise class beast because of the talents of some of their users.

From what I have read, it seems every G brand of router is having their share of problems. Not just Dlink. My previous router was this Dlink 624, and I really liked it except it kept disconnecting many times each day.
My current Linksys WRT54G rev2.0 works reliable, except its severely lacking in features compared to the Dlink. Rarely gets updated, and the hacked firmwares do not really add anything usefull for the average person. And even the hacked firmware rarely gets updated anymore. Your at the mercy of the guy writing it and what he wants in it, not what you want. |
