said by Maxo : Sure it does. Anyone on an RT can get whatever speeds are sold by that ISP.
They can sync. up at the max speed based on the distance from these offices, however, that does not mean they will get 1500k once in sync. with 1500k. It depends on the ATM's delivering the bandwidth to the customers. Cable in the past has been known to have problems with bandwidth but those companies have since gone under. I have checked into cable in several different markets and people are actually getting over what they pay for. Where as DSL you will never get 768k if on that package. My neighbor never has even hit 760kbps.... The technology is unstable.... Very. |

Sure it does. Anyone on an RT can get whatever speeds are sold by that ISP. That aside and having nothing to do with what we are getting at. The whole node thing. Sure everyone in an area shares their CO or RT. And from those COs and RTs everyone shares up to the Access Concentrator (usually a redback but juniper is starting to make it's way into the market.) Everyone on the different ACs have to share that AC with others on it. And then from the AC everyone has to share the internet pipes. The better DSL ISPs have made sure that the COs, RTs, and ACs have enough capacity to never be running at full. Whereas with cable nodes are almost always oversold so speeds fluctuate for a lot of people. People not on oversold nodes don't have these problems. So it's not really an issue on DSL for Cable as much as who's ISP is overselling their equipment. -- Girls don't really like me That's why I hate myself Maybe it's cause of the way I look Or maybe it's something else »maxolasersquad.com |

| reply to Maxo I work at an ISP and sell DSL daily... Speed has nothing to do with the CO or RT. It has to do with Distance from the CO or RT (How much you sync up at is one thing). You can sync up solidly at 1500 with dsl but that doesn't mean your going to get it.... From the CO it goes into a redback router, and from the redback router it's routed to either the ISP (if you go through a differnt ISP) or the Providers ATM. This is where everyone meets and the main ATM's come together and the speed is shared. So this is a connecting point in which several lines come together. That is the exact same definition as a node. |

| reply to indysz All internet service is a shared service. But with Cable you are sharing your node with your neighbors. With DSL you are sharing at the CO or RT. And even if your pipe is clean up to the CO/RT or up to your node you are still sharing the internet with everybody else in the whole world. This was best demonstrated with the blaster worm. The problems of oversold COs is more or less a thing of the past and is almost NEVER a problem anymore. DSL speeds are not 670k and cable speeds are not 3400kbps. DSL speeds are based on what is available in your area and what you decide to buy. Cable speeds are which plan you decide to buy. Some people are seeing ~4000kbps/550kbps speeds with DSL for less than $50/month. It depends on where you are and who your ISP is. -- Girls don't really like me That's why I hate myself Maybe it's cause of the way I look Or maybe it's something else »maxolasersquad.com |

| reply to StarTopology That's funny, I work at an ISP, and beleive me DSL is just as much of a shared medium as Cable. I think you should review the definition of broadband. That's the only way to make money is by overselling bandwidth. DSL is pretty slow, all my neighbors get like 670k and I test at 3400kbps on my cable (and cable has been around for 8 years where I live) |

| reply to indysz Cable Modems are great. You just have to tell your neighbor they suck. That is really the biggest problem for cable. Unlike DSL where the customer has there own cable pair all the way back to the central office you are sharing your coax connection with those on your street. You either have neighbors that don't have a cable modem, or they are on at different times than you. |

| reply to tiger72 said by tiger72 : said by ArchAngel21x : With the caps cable has, the no server restrictions of DSL, plus what you just mentioned, I say DSL could start to take over. I guess most home users don't care about hosting servers, but as people use more bandwidth intensive apps the caps will become very annoying for all.
hosting servers isn't very important for a vast majority of people, and caps don't apply to many of the services. RoadRunner (for example) doesn't have any caps. Sadly only Comcast makes the news =\
Road Runner does have caps. My cap is 40 Gig per month. -- I will reduce the government by dissolving the senate & house of representatives. With my new powers, I will protect America against terror and make this country great. Trust me. |

| reply to ArchAngel21x Yeah the caps on cable suck, I hope to get DSL at my new house especially that new T1 speed tier. Going thru a local ISP I can get the fast service for 37.99/month. I WILL feel sorry for those on cable with the 200k uploads.
I should be close to one of these RT's »Qwest Remote Terminal Pics |

| reply to ArchAngel21x With me personally this is the sticking point that makes me stay with DSL. Even though my speeds aren't that great (512/128) I don't really need more and being able to run my servers is very sweet. While my cable I had previously offered better speeds my DSL is more consistent and stable. -- Girls don't really like me That's why I hate myself Maybe it's cause of the way I look Or maybe it's something else »maxolasersquad.com |
