Re: 6208 DVR

Come to think of it what stew said is what I was told. They would be making calls to HD subscribers to set up appointments for installs starting the 23rd. I would suggest making life easier on one's self by calling and making the appointment yourself and not taking a chance of missing the one random call they will make to you as an HD subscriber.

I think we should all just wait until the 23rd is here to start calling. There are so many different stories going around and not only that my company can and will change their minds in a minutes notice. A little patience.

We were told at our company meeting this past week that InHD1 & 2 are amongst three upcoming channels, PBS being the other one. I don't know a time line though. I would venture off and say probably by April.

I think I speak for most people when I say that we would all rather have Discovery HD than PBS HD. We'll just have to wait and see. I think the main focus now though is going to be getting VOD (Video-on-Demand)working in Dallas now. We have allot of work to do before this happens, but it would be nice to see Comcast continue to add some quality HD channels while we're waiting on this VOD.

Do you have any idea now when we will get vod?
Do you know if we will have to get the new box for vod?

I talked with a Comcast CSR yesterday. Did not have any information on when iNHD1&2 would be added in Dallas area. Actually, he had never heard of the channels!!

He did tell me the following:

1. DVR available at the end Feb.
2. VOD available in the summer

I just now got off the phone with a CSR and she said that the 6208 will not be out for another couple of months due to testing troubles. Is that true? Does she know what she is talking about? How can we contact someone who knows the truth and can get us set up with the 6208?

This is starting to get me annoyed. I work for Comcast and I have somewhat of an inside track on things. The CSR who you spoke with is mis-informed. The DVR's were pushed back because of technical problems by Motorola in December. We are now to a point where this coming week we should see some installs happening. I have had a 6208 box for about 3 weeks now (For the 2nd time) and it works like a champ.

Re: 6208 DVR

Kcharg, I'm aware that you work for Comcast, I have read this entire thread. Where I am confused is how can they do an install if no one can get one because the CSRs don't know jack. I understand they are going to call people, but what if I miss the call and want to set up an install by calling a CSR. I would think Comcast would let the CSRs know what is up if they are going to be installing these thing this week. Sorry to make you angry that is not my intent.

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

I can see both sides of this one, but I lean a little toward JD on this one.
There does seem to be a lot of misinformation and ignorance on the part of CSR's at Comcast.
I don't mean to indict the entire company Kcharg, but besides looking for info on HD and the 6208, there have been a lot of other CSR problems.
As an example, I called about my HD install and was told by once service rep that we would not be getting HD service until this summer at the earliest.(my install was scheduled for later that week)
I've read about several of them in other markets on other forums and it just seems like there needs to be a little more training and/or information given to the CSR staff.

It seems to me, if we can get the 6208 installed on the 28th, we should be able to call the CSR's this week to setup an install. The availibilty of the boxes should not be an issue with anybody in the company.

Well three calls - Friday, Monday morning, Monday afternoon have yielded three different answers. Friday I was told I could order on Monday; Monday morning my name was taken down for a return call; Monday afternoon I was told first that the boxes were in very limited numbers, then that they were not available. Hmmm... for most companies odd to turn down new revenue; for Comcast, unfortunately yet another customer service f***-up(KCharg - we know you are not in customer service; especially since you actually try to help and seem to have a clue about the service ).

So lets see if anyone else playing CSR roulette gets an install date or an actual box.

Re: Left hand please meet right hand

Hello, I'm a brand new member, and felt compelled to join because of the horrible customer service that Comcast is providing in the Dallas area. I've gotten nothing but misinformation for months regarding HD, and it seems as if there is no change in sight.

I am, AS WE SPEAK, on hold waiting to talk to a supervisor, because a customer service rep was very rude when I started asking a few questions about DVR. I understand that we're dealing with relatively new technology, but the truth is that Comcast in the DFW area is far, far behind much smaller metro areas, and that the CSRs are not being trained or informed properly.

Kcharg, I understand that you work for them, and I really appreciate you taking time out of your own schedule to provide me/us with valuable information. However, I hope you can understand why I am "...starting to get annoyed."

Same story for me. As of 3:33 p.m. the company line was they are still waiting on Motorola to ship the 6208 and when they do they will be in short supply.

One would think in this soft economy Motorala and Comcast would do everything they could to strike while the iron is hot. But then again, One thing we all probably need to keep in mind is maybe 5 percent of U.S. households have HDTV sets. For most people VOD is more important than HDTV or PVR. I on the other hand do not find VOD on my top ten list (unless the VOD's will be in HD.) With all the channels on Comcast now, I will have my PVR pretty much loaded down all the time. Just think of it boys and girls when we do get the PVR's we will have a new argument on our hands fighting over who has the most time racked up on the old harddrive. I've got a feeling at my house I'll just have to label the 6208 the "trading spaces recorder."

I just got finished talking to a very nice, informed CSR. He said they were supposed to get in 60k of the 6208 and are getting 6k! That is the problem. He said they are taking people with cable and internet first, no exceptions. Boy am I glad I have had both for a year!

CSR Roulette Take 2

Hmm... I figured I'd try again, with 6k, maybe someone would let me be an early adopter. CSR1 says "we were supposed to get 60000, we only got 6000; I need to transfer you to retention - they're the only ones trained on these orders." hmmm... I think.
I get to retention and without being asked if I have cable or HD or internet or stock in Comcast or stock in Disney - I'm told no orders. The offer comes to check when I mention CSR1, then I'm told none came in, email went out today. Hmmmm... as my buddies Click and Clack would say on Car Talk, bo-o-o-o-o-o-gus
Anyone with a different story to tell?

This is what is going to happen in my opinion on the DVR launch. They are looking at the customer's that have multiple lines of business w/ Comcast and going from there. I hate to put it this way but the more you spend on the company the better chance you have of getting the DVR box now. But a little patience would get you the box in a couple of months, I am almost sure about it.

I totally agree with you on this. At our big meeting last week some CSR's that were there discussed some disliking about the way they were being informed about this new product and all I could do was shake my head. I mean only if they would let me train these people everything would fall into place. I know this box front and back, probably as good as anyone could know it in my office but it all does come down to a lack of training. It's all getting better but probably not soon enough.

So, I realize the 6208 is a DVR, but will it record HD broadcasts and play them back with the same quality?? Or is this just a standard Tivo / Replay TV replacement?

Yep! That's why it is so eagerly anticipated. It will do roughly 7-10 hours of true HD recording.

It plays and records HD as if it were live. It's a revolutionary box in my opinion. Just wait and see, you'll love it!

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

To possibly stop the CSR-bashing for just a bit...

With the DVI input enabled on the new 6208 box, is there any plus to using it.
My tv does not have a DVI input. Is there any advantage to a DVI-to-Component converter, or should I just stay with the components all the way

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

Well to correct you a little bit; The 5100 series box should have the updated firmware. I cannot prove this because I don't have a DVI port on the back of my TV either. But you are correct also when you say that the 6208 box has it enabled also. I've heard the advantage is not very noticeable but then some will say it is, I can't judge it until I see it for myself. But put it this way: I would use it If I had it! Another note: Do they make a DVI-Component converter?

Hello kcharg, I have the platinum package and cable modem service. Have been with comcast digital cable and modem since I was @home/att/comcast. I have the HDTV package, Where do I call for the 6208 box? Do I just call them (CSR) or go to the Richardson office (within 5 minutes of my home) and pickit up like I did the 5100 box?

Re: TiVo Series 2 connection: Newbie Post

Just for those wondering I use the DVI connection. I see very little difference honestly between component and dvi. Regular channels look a little better through DVI but a small portion of the right side of the screen is chopped bearly noticeable. JMO

Once again folks it's not going to be that easy just yet. You have to wait for the call from Comcast or just wait until you hear it's all good from me. It's going to be a very limited release. But in your situation since you are a high dollar customer then you should probably get first crack at it.

No. Your STB has DVI-D. If you had DVI-A, you would just be going from analog to analog. No difference. If you don't have a DVI input, use component.

Besides, on my plasma, I can't see the difference between component and DVI-D.

Component is analog, DVI is digital and would be an improvement under either of two circumstances:
1) Television natively accepts digital signals so that no analog conversion is necessary (such as a DLP TV).
2) The television does a superior job of converting the signal to analog than the STB.
Generally there isn't going to be much difference between the D-A converters, but if you have a DLP TV, you might see substantial improvement since you eliminate the analog step entirely.

I can totally understand the big fuss about this box. It's a great thing to come to Comcast, but I cannot tell you for sure that we are going to be installing it this week. Your best bet would be to keep listening for an update. I might know more tomorrow as most of the office people will be at work. But to reiterate what I've been saying, these boxes will be going out on a special basis. One of which I can't control until we get a greater amount of these boxes in our inventory.

Kcharg - I've seen some discussion on AVS about a decline in analog picture quality going from the 5100 to 6208. Have you noticed any difference?

I had to get a drop amp installed to get my signal strength up to an acceptable level and I'm pretty happy with my PQ on all channels at present w/ the 5100.

I've said this approx. 2 or 3 times in this forum. We are slated to get VOD sometime this summer. You will need at least a DCT2000 model box, which in turn is capable of RF Return (For those of you who don't know what RF return is, it is the capability of the DCT talking back via cable line). Stay tuned for the 2nd or 3rd time.
