What patch broke this?

Ok.
For the longest time I've had URL shortcuts on my desktop that contain
http://username:password@PrivateIP
to log into routers and firewalls..

Now, all of sudden after a most recent Windows Update, this feature is broken.

$%@#*&#%@#& MS

I'd prefer not to un-install each of the 4 most recent updates one by one to detemine the culprit.
Rather annoying

Anybody have a clue as to which update breaks this functionality in the name of a security update?

EDIT:
IE6.1 reports 'Invalid syntax error' in the title block.

note you are vulnerable to the phishing hole again if you uninstall it.

Thanks Daemon See Profile

So I'm SOL, un-installing the phishing hole patch would not be wise..

This is another instance that's pushing me to using another web browser..

You might try this. I have not used it, but it is supposed to resolve this issue.

Actually, if I didn't think that the 'phishing hole fix' didn't also contain something else, it wouldn't be a problem to simply remove it, as long as you were careful about what you are visiting.

But another browser would work, too; I've enjoyed Mozilla Firebird for a good while now, and recently upgraded to Firefox .8 and it works like a charm. Regular Mozilla is there for the less adventurous, too... and they all work perfectly fine with URL's that contain username/password info.

Thanks Kilroy See Profile
I tried the hotfix, didn't help.
I then tried manually entering those registry keys, didn't help either.

Marilla9 See Profile
True, I could remove it, and be cautious..
In light of everything that's been going on lately, I've been considering trying Mozilla Firebird.
I've used Mozilla in the past on my Linux boxes.

Also, check this out.
As of this moment, I cannot un-install the q832894 patch.
No add/remove entry, no $NtUninstallKB832894 dir, and no \winnt\inf\q832894.inf to run a manual un-install.

I'm going to download the patch, and run the un-install command line switch and see what happens.

firebird is pretty sweet.

i don't notice any difference between it and IE, except on a few sites that have menus that pop out on mouse over- the links aren't clickable in Firebird, but they are in IE.

not having insane amounts of pop-ups anymore is nice too.

I should note I added new registry keys, following this setion of the article:

How to disable the new default behavior for handling user information in HTTP or HTTPS URLs
To disable the new default behavior in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, create iexplore.exe and explorer.exe DWORD values in one of the following registry keys and set their value data to 0.
For all users of the program, set the value in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE

For the current user of the program only, set the value in the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE

I hear you Daemon See Profile
I need an alternate browser anyway so I won't feel locked in to IE.

bcastner See Profile
That's it!!! Thanks!!!
Was the link you provided located on one of the other MSKB articles already posted in this thread? Or did you search the MSKB for it?

Edit:
So, to sum it up,
Once patch Q832894 has been installed, the following registry subkey and DWORD must be created:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE

iexplore.exe DWORD set to 0.

Cool!

Thanks everyone for your help.
Very appreciated

Frosty,

I could not let a venerable member of the Linksys and Wireless Forums down.

I used my newly "Grand Pooba" status as an MS-MVP to complain under a MSDN site, and within an hour there was a new KB. To be fair, there were a lot of intranet shortcut issues that MS had not completely expected. And I was unlikely the first to complain.

But the "fix" will fix things.

My best to you,
Bill Castner

Many thanks

Another reason why you're a MVM and MS-MVP
